Job description

Role overview

McKinsey & Company is hiring a Business Analyst for its Private Capital practice in New York, NY. In this role, you will support client teams working on complex private capital and principal investor challenges, contributing across the full engagement cycle. The position is centered on analytical problem-solving, financial assessment, and strategic thinking for private equity, distressed debt/credit, real estate, infrastructure, and institutional investor clients.

What you will do

You will work alongside small consulting teams, typically made up of 3 to 5 colleagues, and take part in every stage of a client engagement. Your work will include collecting and interpreting information, building and testing hypotheses, and shaping recommendations for client leaders.

In the Private Capital practice, you will help solve high-stakes issues for investors and asset owners, including deal screening, due diligence, and improvement of portfolio company performance. You will also support firm-level work related to strategy, governance, and operations.

Your day-to-day work will require you to apply valuation methods and strategic analysis to client situations. You will build frameworks for business problem-solving, perform quantitative and qualitative analysis, support benchmarking and financial modeling, and use data-backed reasoning to evaluate organic and inorganic growth opportunities.

A key part of the role will involve intensive due diligence. This may include gathering and reviewing historical deal information, creating and carrying out a detailed work plan, examining contracts and policies, studying data sets, identifying potential risks, comparing competitors, and completing financial and valuation analysis.

During your first few years, you will work on multiple client assignments and collaborate with a broad range of colleagues and clients across different industries.

Development and working environment

The firm emphasizes learning through apprenticeship, coaching, and structured development. You will receive guidance from experienced colleagues, including a senior mentor from your office or practice, as well as a professional development manager who helps align your staffing with your goals and the needs of client teams.

You are expected to thrive in a demanding, high-performance environment where resilience, curiosity, and the ability to adapt matter. The role also offers clear feedback, opportunities to contribute ideas, exposure to varied teams, and a global community of colleagues across more than 65 countries and 100 nationalities.

Benefits and compensation

The role includes a competitive salary, with pay determined by location, experience, and skills, along with a comprehensive benefits package designed to support overall well-being for you and your family.

Qualifications

Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree, or a master’s degree plus at least 1 year of work experience after completing the undergraduate degree. Prior due diligence experience of at least 1 year in a consulting firm, investment bank, or major corporation is required.

You should have a strong academic record, a clear interest in investing and a working understanding of how the industry functions, including its key participants and drivers. Strong financial analysis capabilities are important, including the ability to review financial statements, build financial models, and assess risk.

The role also calls for strong analytical ability, advanced Excel skills, quantitative problem-solving, and ideally some exposure to market modeling. You should bring intellectual curiosity, creativity, adaptability, collaboration skills, a sense of social responsibility, and a strong leadership track record from academic, professional, or extracurricular settings.

Fluency in English is required so you can communicate complex ideas clearly in both spoken and written form.
