About Us

The Southern Charity Hospital Trust, established in 2019 following Blair Vining’s battle with terminal bowel cancer, is a community-driven organization providing free healthcare services to those in the southern half of New Zealand who cannot access care through public or private systems. Currently offering colonoscopies, daycase surgical procedures, and dental care, the hospital aims to expand its services based on community needs. It operates solely on donations, grants, and community generosity, receiving no government funding.

About The Role

The Southern Charity Hospital is seeking a passionate and professional individual to join its established Board of Trustees. The Board is responsible for securing funding, fostering community support, and overseeing hospital operations to ensure quality service delivery. This is a rewarding, pro-bono governance role ideal for a dynamic individual with financial and governance expertise who is enthusiastic about driving transformative change in regional healthcare.

About You

The ideal candidate will share the values and commitment to improving healthcare for all New Zealanders. A fundamental passion for the Southern Charity Hospital project and empathy for its mission are essential. Key attributes include:

  • Previous experience in a governance capacity, preferably with chair experience.
  • An understanding of and affinity for the healthcare sector and its challenges.
  • A strategic and collaborative working style.
  • Strong financial acumen.
  • Intellectual curiosity and independent thinking.
  • A diplomatic and constructive approach to differing opinions.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with key stakeholders.

A strong personal character is paramount for becoming a contributing member of this Board. You will have the opportunity to directly witness the impact of collaborating with volunteer teams and the Clinical Committee to advance the hospital's mission and address future community healthcare needs.

Time Commitment

The role requires attendance at approximately 10 Board Meetings annually, plus an Annual Strategy Meeting, which may reduce to 5 Board Meetings per year over time. There is also potential for involvement in sub-committees. Intermittent availability via phone and email between meetings will be necessary.
