Job description
About the Role
Charleston Birth Place, part of Lilac Health - Birth & Wellness Centers, is a freestanding CNM birth center serving families in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, just a short distance from historic Charleston and its beaches. The center is the only CABC-accredited CNM birth center in South Carolina. Since 2008, the practice has supported more than 3,500 families seeking low-intervention, out-of-hospital birth care.
Care is provided both at the newly built 9,000 sq. ft. birth center and at the Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion at the Medical University of South Carolina. Services include extended prenatal visits, labor support, water birth, and regular postpartum follow-up. The broader Nest program also offers chiropractic care, pelvic floor physical therapy, mental health counseling, IBCLC support, and group classes. Wellness offerings include annual exams, contraception, IUD insertion, gynecologic problem visits, and preconception planning.
The practice values midwife autonomy, shared decision-making, and physiologic birth. This opening is for a full-time Birth Assistant who will support the mission of providing respectful, patient-centered maternity care.

- Support the midwife during births and respond quickly when unexpected situations or urgent care needs arise.
- Help coordinate escalation of care with hospitals or other providers and support smooth transfer using SBAR communication.

- Maintain clear communication with patients, families, staff, and outside agencies involved in care.
- Assist with medications and treatments as directed by CNMs.
- Carry out required laboratory tasks.
- Help maintain cleanliness and organization throughout the birth center.
- Participate in clinic operations during office hours, including patient flow support, phone coverage, and scheduling when needed.
- Attend meetings, quality improvement activities, quarterly emergency drills, and fire/disaster drills as required.
- Take on additional tasks as assigned to support practice goals.
Requirements
- Current RN or CPM licensure in South Carolina.
- At least 1 year of experience in maternal/child health, labor and delivery, and newborn care.

- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to stay effective in stressful or fast-moving situations.
- Capacity to anticipate the needs of the CNM, patient, and family.
- Comfort working with a wide range of patients and families.
- Willingness to be on call and remain within 30 minutes of the birth center when scheduled.
- Ability to collaborate with internal teams and external referral partners.
- Commitment to courteous, respectful teamwork and a patient-first approach.
Perks
- Continuing education support, including reimbursement for licensing and dues.
- 4 weeks of paid vacation.
- Health insurance for full-time employees, with the option to add family coverage.
