Job description

Role overview

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is looking for an HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist with solid post-registration experience in a diagnostic laboratory and a completed specialist portfolio in Microbiology. Strong Microbiology experience may also be considered for candidates who are newly HCPC registered.

About the service

The post is based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, on the edge of the town and within easy reach of central London by direct rail to Marylebone. The hospital is known as the birthplace of the Paralympics and includes a spinal unit, regional burns and plastics services, maternity, cancer care, and an ophthalmic unit.

You will join a welcoming team in a busy Microbiology/Serology department that supports Trust hospitals and the surrounding community. The laboratory handles more than 400,000 specimens each year and uses a broad range of modern equipment and platforms across microbiology and serology.

Working pattern

The laboratory runs on a seven-day rota and provides 24-hour cover. The successful candidate will be expected to work within the shift system to support uninterrupted patient care across the Trust.

Key duties

In this role, you will contribute to the delivery and ongoing development of a comprehensive clinical microbiology and serology service. You will rotate through different sections of the department, gaining experience across the diagnostic microbiology areas and helping maintain high standards of practice.

You will support quality and accreditation requirements, make sure procedures are followed, and keep appropriate documentation up to date so that quality, health, safety, and security standards are maintained for staff, the department, and the Trust.

You will also take an active role in the training and development of technical, medical, and support colleagues, while continuing to develop your own skills and contributing ideas for service improvement.

Laboratory technology

The department is equipped with Mast Urisystem, Serosep EntericBio, BD Bactec and MGIT, Bruker MALDI ToF, Biomerieux FilmArray, Cepheid GeneXpert, BD Kiestra, BD Phoenix, BD Max, Thermo QS5 and Kingfisher. The serology laboratory includes Cobas 4800, Abbott Alinity, Liaison XI and Geenius.

Person profile

The ideal applicant will be self-motivated, dependable, trustworthy, and able to work accurately to strict deadlines and under pressure.
