Overview

This role is offered on a contingent basis and depends on the successful award of a contract that is currently under evaluation.

Role Summary

The Bacteriology Staff Scientist will contribute to in vitro and in vivo research involving bacterial threat agents. The position includes building animal models and carrying out microbiological and immunological experiments. The scientist will study bacterial pathogens and support the advancement of vaccines and therapeutics within the Bacteriology Division.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out bacterial culturing, enumeration, and challenge experiments.
  • Assist in the assessment of vaccine candidates and therapeutic approaches.
  • Review experimental results and help prepare reports.
  • Work with teams across divisions on research programs.
  • Follow laboratory safety practices and biosurety requirements.
  • Prepare written reports and scientific publications, and present results in meetings.

Qualifications and Knowledge

  • Understanding of microbial pathogenesis.
  • Working knowledge of GLP and BSL-2/BSL-3 compliance requirements.
  • Strong technical writing skills and the ability to work effectively with others.
  • Background in a life sciences discipline relevant to the work, along with experience in a research laboratory.
  • Proven subject matter expertise in at least one area and the ability to carry out independent research, demonstrated through multiple technical reports and/or peer-reviewed publications.
  • Ability to complete assigned work independently and share findings with the wider project team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in immunology, microbiology, or a related discipline.
  • At least 4 years of experience in bacteriology or a closely related research area.
  • Experience developing animal models.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain SECRET security clearance eligibility, without access to classified information.
  • Ability to enroll in the Personnel Reliability Program (PRP) if needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active SECRET clearance is preferred.
  • Master's degree or above is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

The annual salary for this role ranges from $95,000 to $133,000.
