The role is focused on maintaining safe work practices, checking compliance with safety requirements, and helping to manage high-risk activities responsibly.
Academic background
The preferred qualification is a Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health, or a closely related discipline.
Professional training
The position calls for practical training in Occupational Safety and Health, along with knowledge in incident investigation and root cause analysis, risk assessment and hazard identification, work-at-height safety, scaffold inspection and scaffold safety awareness, first aid and CPR, fire safety and emergency response, and permit-to-work systems.
Experience
Applicants should have at least 2 years of experience in a safety-related position within construction, maintenance, engineering, oil and gas, or a similar environment. Experience should include site inspections, toolbox talks, site supervision, and oversight of contractor activity and other high-risk tasks.
Knowledge and skills
Strong working knowledge of Kenyan occupational safety and health legislation is required, including OSHA 2007, DOSH regulations, and the practical use of workplace safety management systems. The role also requires the ability to spot unsafe acts and unsafe conditions, carry out site audits and inspections, prepare incident reports, JSAs, risk assessments, and safety statistics, and communicate clearly while exercising leadership on site. The Assistant HSE Officer must also be capable of stopping unsafe work when there is immediate danger to people, property, or the environment.
Key duties
While on site, the Assistant HSE Officer will ensure that approved risk assessments, JSAs, and permits are being followed, lead or support pre-task safety briefings and toolbox talks, confirm that equipment inspections are valid and properly recorded, and verify that competent supervision is in place for higher-risk work. The role also involves carrying out ongoing safety checks during the task and taking action to halt unsafe work where necessary. When needed, the officer will assist with or lead incident and near-miss investigations.
