Job description
Job Summary
The Assistant Dean for Research is a senior leadership role on the Savannah campus, focused on strengthening research activity across the campus. The position is intended to improve research output, create independent research opportunities, and support scholarship involving UME learners, GME residents, and faculty members.
Role Overview
This leader will partner closely with the Campus Dean to help oversee research operations across undergraduate medical education and graduate medical education.
Research Infrastructure and Strategy
- Create and carry out a campus-wide plan to improve the research reputation of the MCG Savannah Campus.
- Encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration within the college, across the university, and with outside partners.
- Guide grant-related activity by helping identify funding sources, supporting proposal preparation, and advising on sponsor compliance requirements.
- Build and maintain research support structures such as mentoring for early-career faculty and training sessions on grant writing and research methods.
- Promote a research environment that is collaborative, encouraging, and supportive.
Faculty Support
- Develop programs that strengthen faculty capability in research and scholarship.
- Work with the Campus Dean and senior leaders to identify faculty development needs and create individualized growth plans linked to research and scholarship.
- Create recognition initiatives that highlight faculty research accomplishments and scholarly work.
- Support faculty through promotion and tenure processes with emphasis on research, creative activity, and outside funding.
Research Productivity
- Maintain a strong national reputation through scholarly publications and conference presentations.
- Build opportunities for grant-funded research programs across the institution.
- Help students and faculty share their work through publications, presentations, and other scholarly channels.
- Lead an annual research conference designed for UME and GME audiences.
- Encourage innovation, flexibility, and ongoing learning in research.
Community Partnerships
- Develop and sustain partnerships with local, regional, and global communities for community-engaged research that addresses social challenges.
- Create ways for students and faculty to collaborate with community organizations for shared learning and meaningful impact.
- Represent the college at meetings and events centered on community engagement and research impact.
- Define best practices for community-based scholarship and provide professional development that supports faculty in this area.
Working Pattern and Compensation
This is a year-round, fiscal-year position with a full-time commitment of 1.0 FTE. Pay is based on education, experience, and achievements, and depends on fund availability. Final rank and salary are determined at hire using factors such as experience, education, credentials, specialty, training, internal equity, and market data.

About the Institution
The Medical College of Georgia is centered in Augusta and also operates regional clinical campuses across the state, plus a four-year campus in Athens in partnership with the University of Georgia. The AU/MCG-GS Savannah Partnership was formed in 2023 to help address physician shortages in Georgia. The Savannah community has supported medical education for years, including clinical rotations at St. Joseph’s/Candler Health System since 2007 and a residential campus established in 2011. The partnership expects its first freshman class of 40 students in Fall 2024, and the campus will be located at the existing GS Armstrong Campus and the Health Professions Academic Building in Waters College of Health Professions.
