The opportunity
Phalen Leadership Academies is seeking a dedicated art teacher who brings energy, creativity, and strong instructional practice to the classroom. In this role, you will help build a supportive learning space where scholars can grow academically and socially. The position calls for a teacher who sets challenging goals, keeps students accountable for meeting them, and uses purposeful instruction and assessment to improve outcomes.
Key outcomes
- All scholars are expected to achieve their projected growth targets in arts.
- At least 85% of scholars should report satisfaction with the classroom experience.
- 90% of scholars should remain enrolled through the school year.
- Average daily attendance should reach 95%.
- Students who are not yet on grade level should make 1.5 years of growth.
Role expectations
You will design and deliver rigorous instruction, create a strong classroom culture, monitor scholar progress, and adjust teaching methods or provide interventions when needed. The goal is to support mastery of both academic and social skills so scholars are prepared for success.
Experience and education
- Genuine commitment to working with students and families in underserved communities.
- Bachelor’s degree or a higher qualification from an accredited college or university, with required endorsements where applicable.
- Valid state teaching license, or current enrollment in a credentialing program.
- Strong instructional skill grounded in standards-based teaching and data-informed assessment.
- Experience using student data to shape and improve instruction.
The network
Phalen Leadership Academies is a nonprofit education network working to improve communities across the country by offering resources that are often unavailable in traditional school models. Along with turnaround school leadership and charter school launches, the organization supports school communities through summer learning, reading and math intervention, and workforce development programming. These offerings create additional pathways for staff growth, career advancement, and expanded earning opportunities.
The campus
PLA @ Nixon Elementary School is located at 1000 Edgar D Nixon Ave, Montgomery, AL 36104. The school serves about 450 students and is built on the belief that every student is a scholar with strong potential. Since becoming a premier charter school in 2022 with support from the Montgomery Education Foundation and Phalen Leadership Academies, Nixon has worked with families and the community to improve educational outcomes and create a safe, encouraging environment where scholars feel valued and empowered.
Compensation and benefits
Teachers receive a market-aligned base salary. Benefits also include healthcare, vision, and dental coverage, as well as access to professional development, coaching, mentoring, and collaboration within the school community. Incentive and bonus opportunities are also available.
