Job description

Role overview

This position focuses on controls work for Global CARE (Conveyor Automation Robotic Engineering), with a strong emphasis on AMR (Autonomous Mobile Robot) and AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) systems. The specialist will contribute to the design and development of hardware, software, and fleet-management capabilities for autonomous transport solutions. A major part of the role involves bringing mobile robots into industrial settings, especially through controls engineering and servo drive programming.

Primary responsibilities

  • Coordinate with internal corporate teams to understand requirements and communicate updates clearly.
  • Develop, validate, and finalize AMR/AGV control hardware architecture.
  • Develop, validate, and finalize AMR/AGV software architecture, including RAS-based systems.
  • Create AMR/AGV programs in PLCs, design new HMI screens, map tags and I/Os, and establish interlocks with VFDs such as Siemens and SEW and other connected devices.
  • Configure and deploy AGV/AMR solutions using the Siemens SIMOVE platform.
  • Program Siemens PLCs (S7-1200 and S7-1500) and servo drives, and troubleshoot motion-control issues.
  • Integrate robotic systems with factory IT/OT environments, including HMIs and SCADA platforms.
  • Monitor, manage, and optimize AGV/AMR fleets to ensure efficient performance.
  • Work with AI-enabled robotics tools and virtual commissioning workflows.
  • Use Siemens Operations Copilot for assigning tasks, performing diagnostics, and reviewing live data.
  • Implement route optimization, obstacle avoidance, and dynamic rerouting logic.
  • Apply knowledge of fleet-management software and sensor integration in autonomous systems.
  • Collaborate effectively with customers, suppliers, and plant personnel.
  • Support shift-based work when needed to cover EE and NA region timing.
  • Work effectively in fast-changing environments and handle multiple robotic systems at once.

Technical skills and capabilities

  • Strong practical experience with Siemens TIA Portal for PLC and HMI development.
  • Hands-on exposure to industrial communication protocols such as Profinet, Profibus, Ethernet IE, and CC Link.
  • Experience using Siemens PLC SIM software for simulation and testing.
  • Understanding of Siemens virtual commissioning methods and how to support communication inputs during simulation.
  • Ability to review E-plan drawings, control-panel circuits, and power-wiring documentation.
  • Working knowledge of Siemens HMI software, simulation tools, and fleet-manager platforms.
  • Added advantage: programming exposure in Python, Java, and C#.
  • Added advantage: familiarity with automation and AI-related tools and workflows.
  • Added advantage: experience with ODIL and Unified HMI.

Additional information

The role is based in Chennai, India. It requires close coordination across controls, software, and integration tasks related to autonomous mobile robotics and automated guided vehicles. Shift work may be required to support timing needs for the EE and NA regions.
