Job description

Role overview

This position is for an Agronomist to support a set of almond orchards located between Mildura, Robinvale and Swan Hill in Victoria. The role is centred on improving orchard productivity and fruit quality through expert agronomic support, with a strong emphasis on pest and disease management.

The work is largely field-based: around 70% of the time is expected to be spent in orchards carrying out inspections, checking plant health, and gathering field information. The rest of the role focuses on analysis, reporting, planning, and coordination. There is also occasional backup support across irrigation, spray, and nutrition activities, working alongside the Technical Services Manager to keep agronomic practices aligned.

Primary responsibilities

  • Oversee the observation, identification, control, and reporting of pests and diseases across almond orchards.
  • Help design and continuously improve pest and disease management practices that support stronger yield and healthier trees.
  • Support the creation and rollout of annual pest and disease plans at farm level.
  • Guide operational teams so interventions for pest and disease issues happen promptly and effectively.
  • Carry out regular orchard checks, gather field data, and review patterns to anticipate and reduce risks.

Technical support and advisory work

  • Advise Technical Services and Farm Management teams on agronomy matters, especially pest and disease control, and provide input on irrigation, nutrition, and soil health when needed.
  • Keep current with new pest and disease developments, products, and industry practices through research, trials, and sector engagement.
  • Train operational staff and share knowledge to strengthen capability in pest and disease management.

Monitoring, analysis and reporting

  • Track, analyse, and report on pest and disease patterns, treatment results, and orchard health outcomes.
  • Contribute to wider farm reporting and analysis, including insights related to yield and performance.
  • Support the Technical Manager with planning and progress tracking as required.

Additional support areas

While the main focus is pest and disease management, the role may also step in to assist with other agronomic programs when needed, such as irrigation and nutrition, particularly if coverage is required or demand increases temporarily.

Irrigation and soil nutrition

  • Assist with the design and implementation of irrigation and nutrition programs together with the Technical Services team.
  • Monitor orchard conditions and recommend actions to help maintain tree health where appropriate.

Field operations and trials

  • Support broader field monitoring tasks, including soil data collection and crop inspections.
  • Take part in trials and improvement initiatives across orchard operations.

About you

To be suitable for this opportunity, you should hold a bachelor’s degree in agronomy or a related discipline such as horticulture or agricultural science. You should also bring at least one year of experience working as an agronomy professional in large-scale outdoor crops and/or orchards.

Experience in any crop type will be considered, but solid knowledge of pest and disease management for outdoor crops is essential. A good understanding of the science behind broadacre or irrigated horticultural production is important, along with confidence using agricultural software and data analysis tools. You should also be able to support projects and manage costs from early planning through to completion.

Above all, this role suits someone who enjoys working outdoors and is motivated by contributing to healthy farm performance.
