Job description

About the organisation

The University of Auckland, known as Waipapa Taumata Rau, is New Zealand’s leading university. With more than 6,000 academic and professional staff supporting over 46,000 students, it is also one of the country’s largest employers. Its eight faculties and 11 service divisions create a varied, fast-moving and highly complex environment where high standards matter.

Student and Scholarly Services supports students throughout their journey, from the point of transition and engagement through to success and wellbeing. Within this area, the Student Engagement team helps create meaningful opportunities for students to connect, develop and flourish.

About the role

The University is seeking a detail-oriented, service-minded and motivated Admissions Adviser to join its collaborative Admissions team. In this position, you will help students from New Zealand and overseas begin their studies by assessing admissions applications, offering expert guidance, and handling complex admission and credit-related processes.

You will work in a busy, high-volume setting where accuracy, sound judgement and strong organisation are essential. The role suits someone who enjoys working with detailed information, solving problems, building relationships and supporting students from many cultural backgrounds.

You will be part of an experienced team that values teamwork, improvement and positive student experiences.

Key responsibilities

  • Review applications for admission against University rules and entry criteria.
  • Assess whether applicants meet admission requirements and whether prior credit can be recognised for undergraduate and postgraduate study.
  • Support students in meeting conditions for admission, with particular attention to Safety Check requirements.
  • Conduct safety check interviews.
  • Provide clear, accurate and timely guidance to applicants, students, agents and University staff on admission requirements, qualifications and policy.
  • Track and progress applications in the student management system while meeting agreed service standards and deadlines.
  • Help applicants identify suitable study pathways and alternative options where relevant.
  • Work with faculties and other stakeholders on application reviews and admissions procedures.
  • Keep admissions records accurate and help maintain the integrity of student data.
  • Contribute to process enhancements, system improvements and continuous improvement work.
  • Support a cooperative, inclusive and student-focused team culture.

About you

You are someone who enjoys guiding people through complex processes and creating positive experiences through excellent customer service. You bring strong attention to detail, good judgement and the ability to handle a large workload without losing accuracy or professionalism.

You are flexible, collaborative and comfortable in a fast-paced setting where priorities can change during the day. Most importantly, you are committed to supporting students from diverse backgrounds and contributing to a high-performing team.

Required experience and capabilities

  • Experience interviewing applicants.
  • Comfort using Excel, Teams and Zoom.
  • Dependability, as interviews are pre-booked and must take place as scheduled.
  • Strong communication skills and a professional manner.
  • Critical thinking and good judgement, especially around risk assessment and confidentiality.
  • A background in teaching or social work, or familiarity with the Children’s Act, would be an advantage.

Skills and experience considered important

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Well-developed organisational skills and a structured approach to work.
  • Strong written and verbal communication ability.
  • Good interpersonal skills and a commitment to excellent service.
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines and busy workloads accurately.
  • Strong problem-solving ability and attention to detail.
  • Capacity to work well in a team.
  • Confidence using multiple systems and adapting to changing processes.
  • Awareness of diverse cultures and international education contexts.

Highly beneficial experience

  • Previous work in a university or other tertiary education environment.
  • Experience assessing admission applications or comparing qualification equivalence.
  • Familiarity with New Zealand immigration policy.
  • Fluency in a language other than English.
  • Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and commitment to te reo Māori and tikanga Māori.

Working arrangement

This position can be offered as either a full-time role of 37.5 hours per week or split into two part-time roles of 18.75 hours per week each, depending on the candidate’s preference. It is a fixed-term contract lasting 8 months, through to the end of February 2027.

Pay

The salary range for this role is NZ$63,600 to NZ$68,100 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.

What the University offers

  • A supportive, people-centred workplace.
  • Flexible employment practices where appropriate.
  • Employer superannuation contribution of up to 6.75%.
  • Five weeks of annual leave.
  • Access to professional development.
  • Generous parental leave support.
  • Staff discounts, recreation centre access, discounted parking and wellbeing initiatives.
  • A caring, collaborative environment focused on student wellbeing and success.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online by 1 July 2026 and should include a cover letter and CV showing how your experience matches the role. Email applications will not be accepted. For a confidential discussion about the position, contact Anne-Sophie Adelys at anne-sophie.adelys@auckland.ac.nz.
