Job description

About the role

SouthRoads is a respected Southland business that is central to building and maintaining regional infrastructure. As the company grows, it is creating a new opportunity for a commercially minded accounting professional to join the team.

This position goes beyond standard accounting duties. You will work closely with contract managers, operational leaders, and the finance team to understand the factors that influence performance, profitability, and day-to-day business success. The role also provides exposure to the aggregate side of the business and the operational realities of the industry, so previous experience in that area is not required.

Working arrangement

  • This is a permanent position with flexible hours.
  • Hours can range from 20 to 40 per week.
  • Start and finish times can be arranged to suit your needs.

Key responsibilities

  • Support aggregate costing, performance review, and stock movement analysis.
  • Provide job and contract costing insights that help improve profitability.
  • Work with operational managers to assess costs and business performance.
  • Assist with reporting, forecasting, process enhancements, and financial planning.

What you will bring

To succeed in this role, you should have 3 to 5 years of accounting or finance experience, preferably gained in a commercial, contracting, construction, or similar setting. You will need solid Excel capability and confidence using financial systems. An interest in costing, business performance, and operational decision-making is important, along with a proactive mindset and the curiosity to investigate issues and find practical solutions.

Equally important is your ability to collaborate well with others. The finance team is described as supportive, approachable, and grounded in a culture where people share knowledge, ask questions, and help one another grow. There is a strong focus on learning and continuous improvement.

Why this role stands out

This is a chance to broaden your commercial experience, work closely with the operational side of a growing business, and see the direct impact of your work on real projects.
