Key responsibilities

This position serves as a primary support contact for transit technology users, helping staff resolve issues, escalate risks when needed, and maintain reliable day-to-day system performance. It also involves administering hardware and software platforms, guiding teams through technical processes, and helping ensure transit technology remains aligned with service goals.

  • Provide first-line help, troubleshooting, issue resolution, and escalation support for transit technology users and staff.
  • Oversee daily operation and support of transit hardware and software systems, including routine checks to confirm systems are functioning as intended.
  • Support a range of technology tools such as CAD/AVL, farebox systems, digital signage, scheduling and planning software, mobility platforms, transit signal priority, infotainment tools, and Power BI reporting.
  • Act as a technical resource for transit staff and help maintain the devices and equipment that connect with other transit systems.
  • Build a strong working understanding of Guelph Transit business areas so technology support matches operational needs.
  • Create and maintain SOPs, user guides, and technical manuals for system administration and operational use.
  • Help maintain transit technology security requirements in line with corporate and industry standards.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and support changes that improve service delivery and close operational gaps.
  • Lead change management activities tied to technology improvements, including testing, documentation updates, staff training, and technical support.
  • Work with vendors on pricing, minor issue resolution, and support for day-to-day operational matters.
  • Support capital enhancement projects with subject-matter expertise, including upgrades, integrations, documentation, training, and procurement-related materials such as RFPs and tenders.
  • Coordinate with Fleet and IT teams to maintain and troubleshoot onboard hardware and transit technology administration.
  • Carry out system administration tasks such as module upgrades, user management, permissions, and privilege assignment.
  • Contribute to or lead the development of user applications and improvements to existing applications.
  • Conduct research, prepare technical specifications, and work with consultants to ensure contract compliance.
  • Provide input on upcoming transit technology initiatives and ensure systems remain compatible with departmental practices and objectives.
  • Work in different locations during the day, including office spaces, buses, and transit terminals.
  • Take on other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and requirements

Applicants should bring a post-secondary degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Science, or a related field, along with solid experience in technical administration and client support. The city will also consider an equivalent mix of education and experience.

  • Substantial experience in technical system administration and client service support.
  • Understanding of IT system implementation, administration, business process analysis, and data analysis.
  • Working knowledge of intelligent transportation system architecture in a transit setting.
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong analytical ability to diagnose and resolve hardware and software issues.
  • Strong communication skills for technical inquiries, staff training, vendor coordination, and teamwork.
  • Ability to read technical manuals, implementation plans, testing documents, and system specifications.
  • Ability to write user guides, test plans, and internal system communications.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong customer service, stakeholder management, and professional communication skills.
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving environment where priorities may shift quickly.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking ability.
  • Valid G driver’s licence with a clean driving record.
  • Current driver’s abstract required before start date to confirm the licence is in good standing and has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years.
  • The city will assess demerit points and the nature of any infractions to determine eligibility.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be accepted.
