About the role
Rio Tinto is seeking a Hygiene Technician to join the HSE team at Yarwun Refinery in Gladstone, Queensland. This is a permanent position that comes with a competitive salary, annual incentives and a broad range of benefits. The role is based in a coastal location and operates Monday to Friday, with an option to work a 9-day fortnight.

In this challenging and varied environment, you will support the Site Occupational Hygiene team in its daily work and contribute to the health and safety of the site.
Responsibilities
- Carry out occupational hygiene surveys to identify, verify and report exposure risks.
- Perform routine and targeted monitoring activities.
- Help educate, communicate and engage with HSE teams, site leaders and operational staff.
- Keep occupational hygiene records and documentation accurate and up to date.
- Assist with administering systems and programs such as ChemAlert or Cority.
- Oversee site equipment and monitoring devices.
Requirements
- Strong genuine interest in improving worker health and wellbeing.
- Educational background in a scientific discipline.
- Understanding of legal requirements related to health surveillance and occupational hygiene.
- Good working knowledge of MS Office.
- Completion of the Basic Principles of Occupational Hygiene course is desirable.
- Membership of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH) is desirable.

Work location
You will be based at Yarwun Refinery, about 10 km north-west of Gladstone in Central Queensland. The refinery began operations in 2004 and processes bauxite from Weipa and Gove to produce more than three million tonnes of smelter-grade alumina each year. The site runs around the clock and uses both established and emerging technologies to improve processes safely.
Yarwun is part of the Gladstone community and, together with Boyne Smelters Limited and Queensland Alumina Limited, contributes to local community investment through the Here for Gladstone community fund.
