Role overview
Texas Sports Academy is a K-12 program built for dedicated student-athletes who need both strong academics and advanced athletic development. Using a 2-Hour Learning model similar to Alpha School, students complete two times the material in only two hours each day, which leaves the rest of the afternoon open for intensive training with former professional and Division I athletes.
The school is looking for a Junior Youth Mentor to support students in developing confidence, concentration, and resilience so they can succeed in both academics and sport. This position is centered on coaching and mentorship rather than therapy or clinical support, with an emphasis on mindset, motivation, and practical life skills.
This is an early-career opportunity, and applicants with little to a couple of years of experience are encouraged to consider it.
Core duties
- Coach students on confidence and resilience so they can manage pressure, peer relationships, and the normal challenges that come with a high-performance environment.
- Work closely with coaches and guides by sharing useful day-to-day observations while still protecting each student’s privacy.
- Communicate with parents about student engagement, progress, and goals, and discuss ways the family can reinforce learning and growth at home.
- Help students use the TSA learning platform comfortably so technology does not become a barrier to academic or athletic focus.
- Run small-group sessions on topics such as recovering from setbacks, handling pre-game nerves, managing time, and competing in a healthy way.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree is required; backgrounds in psychology, education, kinesiology, social work, sports science, or similar areas are an advantage.
- Open to candidates with 0 to 2 years of experience, including recent graduates.
- Ability to connect naturally with both younger children and teens in a respectful, age-appropriate way.
- Strong active listening skills and the ability to ask thoughtful questions before offering advice.
- Comfort working in a sports-focused environment where competition and performance pressure are part of daily life.
- Clear written and verbal communication for concise, professional updates to parents and coaches.
- Remote role available only to applicants based in the United States.
Preferred background
- Experience with K-12 students through practicums, school-based internships, youth volunteering, or camp counseling.
- Exposure to sports or athletics, whether as a player, coach, or staff member in competitive environments.
- Bilingual English/Spanish ability, which can help connect with a broader range of families.
Why this role
You will join a small, mission-focused team that is building a different kind of K-12 experience. The role offers hands-on mentorship, meaningful responsibility, and the opportunity to help shape how emotional and mental growth is woven into everyday school life. It is well-suited to someone at the beginning of their career who wants to make a real impact and develop quickly alongside experienced educators and coaches.
Equal opportunity
Texas Sports Academy is an equal opportunity employer and evaluates candidates based on character, capability, and alignment with the mission.
Compensation
The pay for this position is $20 per hour.
