About the Role
This position supports remote ESPN and ABC events by handling on-site transmission and telecommunications services. The work involves setting up and running high- and low-bandwidth fiber transport, voice and data circuits, encryption and compression tools, and other telecom systems needed for live remote productions. The role focuses on large, complex event transmission and provides on-location support for assigned events.
Team Overview
The Remote Traffic Operations group manages transmission, telecom, and internet connectivity for remote productions. That includes carrying audio and video back to ESPN’s Bristol facility and other locations using fiber, satellite, IP, or mixed transmission paths. The team also arranges temporary telephone service, internet access, Ethernet, and VoIP support at venues, and may travel to sites to oversee installations, vendor coordination, service management, budgeting, and invoice coding for event-related services.
Key Duties
- Oversee transmission and telecom support for remote events across a range of sizes and complexity.
- Coordinate technical and operational planning for assigned programs and events, working closely with Remote Traffic, Transmission, Remote Operations, other ESPN teams, and outside vendors.
- Review and act on work order instructions for specific events, then share the relevant details with all involved parties before and during the event window.
- Deliver hands-on support for transmission services at remote sports venues.
- Deliver hands-on support for telecommunications services at remote sports venues.
- Participate in site surveys for assigned events and help create venue assessments and pre-event plans.
- Keep current on the technical and operational requirements of telecom services and equipment needed to support department responsibilities.
- Confirm that transport vendors and equipment providers meet ESPN’s technical and operational standards.
- Take on additional special assignments as needed.
- Be available for travel and on-site support, including weekends and evening hours.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate brings strong communication and people skills, plus solid organization and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-focused setting. Prior experience of at least 5 years in broadcast or technical operations, especially with remote transport and transmission systems, is preferred. Experience with remote production workflows, telecom services, and managing multiple budgets is also valued.
Education
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification is preferred.
Additional Information
This role requires the ability to lift more than 50 lbs and to work nights, holidays, and weekends. The hiring range for this remote position is $55 to $80 per hour, with final pay influenced by geographic region, internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
