About the role
This part-time onsite role in Delta, British Columbia involves the safe and efficient physical handling of parcels in a warehouse-style operation. Work may include loading, unloading, manually sorting, lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, and placing packages. Package Handlers may be assigned to, or rotate through, different work areas and stations such as loader, unloader, palletizer, scanner, weight-and-key (SWAK), quality assurance (QA), facer, and switcher roles.
Specialized assignments
Some Package Handler duties require additional training or specific responsibilities. These include:
- Package Handler Trainer: trains other Package Handlers on loading, unloading, palletizing, and scanning techniques to support safe and efficient parcel movement.
- Package Handler - Air: performs a multi-step parcel inspection process to help ensure that air-restricted packages are not loaded into an air container.
Essential duties
- Uses a hands-to-surface method for handling parcels.
- Loads and unloads packages from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor carts, and loading grids.
- Repeatedly lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls parcels continuously for about 3 to 5 hours, and may work one or more shifts in a day.
- Sorts parcels by selecting the correct conveyor system through scanning, reading labels and charts, checking numbers, and remembering routing information.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
Additional responsibilities for Trainer role
- Trains new Package Handlers in efficient unloading, loading, palletizing, carrying, small-package handling, SWAK, and non-conveyable parcel handling.
- Provides extra coaching to team members who need more guidance on unloading, carrying, loading, palletizing, small-item handling, SWAK, or non-conveyable package handling, as directed by management.
- Offers feedback on proper parcel-processing techniques when needed.
- Reinforces dock safety standards among peers.
- Understands and demonstrates all required processes and procedures by example.
- Updates managers on sorting conditions so operational efficiency decisions can be made.
- Supports the rollout of new parcel-handling procedures and techniques.
- Continuously loads, unloads, palletizes, lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls parcels while training other Package Handlers.
Additional responsibilities for Air role
- Scans each package in the air consolidation area and checks for hazardous materials or ORM-D classification.
- Loads parcels into the unit load device when applicable.
- Completes restricted-package return-to-sender notifications in SCMS for air-restricted parcels.
- Regularly loads, unloads, lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls packages.
Education and experience
No minimum education is required, and no prior experience is required for the base role. For specialized assignments, prior Package Handler experience with FedEx Express Corporation is preferred, including six months for Package Handler Trainer and six months for Package Handler - Air.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Ability to understand and follow job instructions and safety procedures.
- Ability to distinguish numbers and information accurately in order to sort parcels correctly.
- Ability to use basic tools and equipment such as rollers, dock carts, handheld scanners, chutes, and unloading devices.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment.
- Employees operating switching equipment must hold a valid driver’s licence and maintain a DOT driving record.
- Package Handler Trainers must be able to train multiple peers at the same time.
- Package Handler - Air candidates must successfully complete and maintain FedEx Ground’s Airlift Consolidation Gateway training and the government-required indirect air carrier training, with annual recertification required.
Working conditions
- Work is performed in both hot and cold temperatures.
- The environment is very noisy.
- Must be able to lift and carry between 5 and 50 pounds.
- No travel is expected.
Schedule and additional terms
Mandatory shifts run 5 days per week, from Wednesday through Sunday. Start times are 12:00 pm, 5:00 pm, or 10:00 pm, with shifts lasting 3 to 4 hours. The role requires completion of mandatory tests and training programs, the ability to work in a PC/Windows environment, successful completion of recurring training, and maintaining any required annual credentials. The schedule may change based on business needs. Candidates residing in Quebec must be bilingual in French and English. If a valid driver’s licence is required for the role, the applicant must have a licence such as Class 5, G, or 1 AZ, and a driving record showing no more than two infractions and/or accidents in the 24 months before the application date. Candidates may also be assessed through review of their current driving record, interview results, and any driver skills evaluation.
