Firefighter

Role overview

This position is responsible for active fire suppression, fire prevention, and emergency response work aimed at protecting people and property. The firefighter also supports fellow team members at incident scenes and may be assigned other specialized tasks as needed. The role requires keeping the station, vehicles, and equipment prepared at all times, training regularly while on duty, and representing the department with a professional presence in the community.

Key duties

• Arrive at fire alarms, medical emergencies, vehicle crashes, and other hazardous incidents.
• Control and extinguish fires using the proper methods and equipment.
• Carry out search-and-rescue efforts in urgent, high-risk environments.
• Deliver emergency medical support such as CPR, first aid, and basic life support.
• Work safely around fire engines, ladder trucks, and other apparatus and support vehicles.
• Inspect properties and help enforce fire safety rules and regulations.
• Clean, maintain, and keep firefighting tools and equipment ready for use.
• Prepare clear and complete incident documentation.
• Take part in training sessions, drills, and community outreach activities.
• Maintain the physical condition needed to meet job demands, the annual stress test, and the annual agility test.
• Complete additional duties assigned by the Fire Chief.
• Handle related manual tasks such as hydrant upkeep, hose testing, yard work, sweeping, and mopping.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum age of 18 years.
• Valid South Carolina driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
• Medical First Responder certification.
• NFPA Firefighter 1 certification.
• NFPA Firefighter 2 is preferred and must be obtained to continue employment.
• Incident Command training is preferred.

Physical requirements

The job involves demanding physical work and may require reasonable accommodations where appropriate. The firefighter must be able to operate a car, fire apparatus, and related equipment; apply up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 25 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds continuously; lift and carry loads from 10 to 50 pounds; wear a self-contained breathing apparatus; and climb ladders as high as 100 feet.
