Role overview
CATL is hiring a Financial Modeller to join its UK and European business development function. This full-time remote role focuses on energy storage project development, building and validating operating and financial models, and supporting funding and financing activities for infrastructure projects. The position works across teams and regions to help identify opportunities, manage risk, and strengthen investment returns for a global battery energy storage systems (BESS) business.
What you will do
- Own financial workstreams within projects and ensure sound modelling practices are applied consistently while aligning with wider project inputs.
- Track and interpret electricity market structures, pricing approaches, ancillary service demand, and pricing movements across the UK, Europe, and APAC.
- Design, build, and validate business and financial models, including support for third-party consultant outputs.
- Contribute to funding strategies and financial cases for international BESS projects.
- Review and assure operating and financial models for standalone and co-located BESS projects.
- Develop, assess, and refine project financial models such as LCOE, NPV, and IRR, including sensitivity testing and risk evaluation.
- Work closely with project teams and internal stakeholders to coordinate deliverables across functions.
- Carry out internal quality reviews of modelling work produced by others in line with CATL quality procedures.
- Help identify opportunities and prepare proposals for M&A opportunities, while supporting business development across the UK, EU, and APAC.
- Support colleagues’ development and share knowledge through structured training, workshops, and seminars.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience in the energy or power sector with exposure to both technical and financial modelling.
- Strong capability in financial modelling and investment analysis, including building complex project models.
- Hands-on experience creating robust, flexible, and user-friendly forecasting models for operating and financial analysis.
- Background in UK and European energy storage project development, M&A, or asset rotation.
- Experience preparing financial cases and funding strategies, ideally within renewable energy.
- Project management experience, including ownership of budgets and workstreams, plus involvement in M&A proposal preparation.
- Exposure to consulting, multidisciplinary renewable teams, or other environments supporting commercial and financial evaluation.
- Ability to build effective relationships across teams and contribute to business growth.
- Comfort working collaboratively with colleagues from different disciplines to deliver the best outcome for clients.
- Strong written and spoken communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-specialists.
- Master’s degree in Business, Engineering, or a related field.
- Fluent English is required; additional European languages are beneficial.
- Willingness and ability to travel frequently between China and the UK/Europe.
- Helpful extras include model assurance experience, renewable sector exposure, understanding of policy/regulatory/commercial factors in renewables, a professional accounting or finance qualification, data analysis and visualisation tools, and VBA for Microsoft Excel.
