Role overview
In this position, you will help safeguard One New Zealand and its customers against cyber threats through round-the-clock monitoring, incident handling, and security operations support. You will work within a collaborative Cyber Defence team to investigate alerts, assist with threat detection and containment, and contribute to the reliability, availability, and resilience of the technology environment.
This is a 24/7 Cyber Defence Centre role. The work follows a rotating roster that covers day shifts, night shifts, weekends, and public holidays so that monitoring and response coverage is maintained at all times.
Key duties
- Watch SIEM, EDR/XDR, and related security tools during overnight shifts to spot suspicious behaviour and possible attacks.
- Assess and respond to security alerts, judge the level of risk, and either contain incidents or escalate them in good time.
- Carry out first-pass incident analysis, collect supporting evidence, and keep clear records throughout night operations.
- Carry out threat-hunting tasks based on active threat intelligence and emerging attack patterns.
- Coordinate with senior on-call analysts and other teams when critical incidents need escalation or coordinated response.
- Prepare precise shift handovers with concise incident notes and current status information.
- Adhere to incident response playbooks, operating procedures, and established workflow documents.
What you should bring
- A tertiary-level qualification in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a similar field.
- A solid grasp of cybersecurity fundamentals, common threats, and typical attack methods.
- Exposure to tools such as SIEM, IDS/IPS, firewalls, and EDR/XDR platforms.
- The ability to work with direction while quickly learning new systems and technologies.
- Hands-on experience with Linux, Windows, scripting, TCP/IP, DNS, and packet or log analysis is a strong advantage.
- Security certifications such as SSCP, GSEC, or Security+ are preferred.
- Good written and spoken communication skills.
