Role overview
Hutt City Council is looking for a proactive Compliance Officer to support safe, compliant, and functional buildings across Lower Hutt. This position sits within the Building Compliance team and contributes directly to community safety and legislative compliance.
What the role covers
You will handle a broad range of building compliance work, including Building Warrants of Fitness (BWoF), compliance schedules, dangerous, affected and insanitary buildings, swimming pools, and earthquake-prone buildings.
Key duties
- Look into complaints and respond to urgent compliance matters.
- Complete site inspections and issue statutory notices when required.
- Help manage the Building Warrant of Fitness process effectively.
- Keep pool and earthquake-prone building registers accurate and up to date.
- Work alongside owners, engineers, and other industry professionals to reach safe and practical outcomes.
- Maintain precise compliance records and support ongoing service improvements.
What you should bring
This role suits someone who is practical, service-oriented, and comfortable working in the field. You should be confident interpreting legislation and focused on achieving safe results for the public.
- A Reg 18 qualification or NZQA Level 4 Certificate in Building Regulation, or a similar qualification, or be actively working toward one.
- Hands-on experience with building specified systems such as fire safety.
- Good decision-making, strong organisational ability, and the capacity to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent communication skills and a professional manner when dealing with the public and industry stakeholders.
- A current full driver’s licence with a clean record.
- Previous experience in building compliance, BWoF audits, pools, or earthquake-prone buildings is an advantage.
