Role overview

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a motivated, professionally accredited Clinical Coder (ACC) to become part of its established Clinical Coding Department. This is an opportunity to join a collaborative team that values accuracy, flexibility, and high-quality clinical data.

The post carries a 15% Recruitment and Retention Premium, which is paid each month on top of the base salary.

The Trust has recently introduced Epic as its new Electronic Patient Record platform, and this allows the role to be performed remotely, in a hybrid arrangement, or from the office. Applications are invited from ACC-qualified Clinical Coders anywhere in the UK, including candidates living outside the Torbay area who want to work remotely. For those who prefer to work on site, a dedicated coding office is available at Torbay Hospital.

Main purpose of the role

In this position, you will handle the coding of a range of specialties within an acute NHS setting. The role requires a flexible and adaptable approach, along with the ability to produce accurate, timely coded clinical data by reviewing and interpreting complex clinical information. You will need to use sound independent judgement when sequencing and assigning codes, while following national clinical coding standards, rules, and conventions so the Trust’s data remains reliable and robust.

The coding team extracts and converts inpatient clinical information using ICD-10 and OPCS-4 classifications. This work supports Trust management, contributes to the National Tariff Payment System that helps underpin Trust income, and also plays an important role in clinical audit, governance, and research.

Key duties

  • Code inpatient and day-case episodes across all specialties provided by Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Work closely with clinicians and clinical teams to confirm information recorded in the Electronic Patient Record and maintain a very high standard of coding accuracy and data integrity.
  • Support the development of the team by mentoring less experienced coders and helping with their training.

About the team and working environment

The Trust describes itself as a pioneering integrated care organisation, combining acute hospital, community, and social care services in England for 286,000 residents. The wider organisation places strong emphasis on staff wellbeing, development, inclusion, and a healthy work-life balance.

The Clinical Coding Department is presented as an essential part of the healthcare system, with work that directly affects income recovery and service planning. The team is made up of experienced, committed professionals who work to tight deadlines in a supportive atmosphere, partnering with clinicians, medical secretaries, and other allied colleagues to ensure information is captured and coded correctly.

Additional information

This vacancy is intended for candidates who already hold ACC qualification and have experience coding a variety of specialties within an acute NHS organisation.
