Descrizione del lavoro
About the company
Permag is a major North American manufacturer of samarium cobalt (SmCo) magnets and a provider of engineered magnetic solutions. Through its specialist businesses—Dexter Magnetic Technologies, Electron Energy Corporation (EEC), and Magnetic Component Engineering (MCE)—the company combines knowledge of rare-earth materials, precision magnetics, and advanced manufacturing to deliver high-performance solutions for demanding applications.
Role summary
The Mechanical Design Engineer will shape the mechanical design of precision magnetic components, assemblies, and related parts from early concept work through industrialization and final release for series production. This position connects mechanical engineering, magnetics, and manufacturing by converting technical needs into durable designs that balance performance, manufacturability, and cost. The role also supports the growth of Permag’s European engineering team and helps establish repeatable design standards and processes.
Key responsibilities
- Design magnetic parts, assemblies, housings, and other precision components using 3D CAD tools.
- Carry out mechanical calculations, tolerance studies, and material choices for both metallic and non-metallic parts.
- Use design-to-cost and design-for-manufacturing principles during concept creation.
- Develop and compare solution concepts with magnetics specialists, sales teams, and customers.
- Assist with prototyping, testing, and design refinements based on results.
- Produce technical drawings, bills of materials, and manufacturing documentation in ERP/PDM environments.
- Work closely with magnetics engineering, production, and supply chain teams to ensure designs can be manufactured and scaled efficiently.
- Participate in technical conversations and design reviews with customers.
- Help improve engineering tools, standards, and design methods over time.
- Take on related duties as business needs evolve, within the scope of the role.
Qualifications and experience
A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Precision Engineering, Product Development, or a similar technical discipline is expected. The ideal candidate has 3–5 years of experience in mechanical design or product development, along with practical exposure to CAD-based design and mechanical assemblies. Experience with tolerance management and manufacturing methods such as turning, milling, grinding, or joining is important. Prior work in highly precise industries like aerospace, medical technology, or semiconductors is a plus.
Technical requirements
- Strong ability to work with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, or equivalent tools.
- Solid understanding of materials, mechanical interfaces, and structural design principles.
- Working knowledge of design-to-cost, DFM/DFA, or value engineering techniques.
- Familiarity with ERP/PDM systems and engineering documentation workflows.
- Helpful, but not essential, to understand magnetic-mechanical interactions.
Language requirements
German and English at B2 to C1 level are required.
Additional information
The role is based in Korntal-Münchingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany and is a full-time onsite position. The responsibilities may change over time as business needs develop.
Equal opportunity / who can apply
