Role overview
This position focuses on carrying out routine and advanced haematology investigations that support patient diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing monitoring. The technician will be expected to handle specimens carefully, produce reliable results, and maintain strong standards of safety and quality within a hospital laboratory setting.
Key responsibilities
- Receive blood and related samples, then label, process, and manage them in line with standard operating procedures.
- Run common haematology assays such as complete blood counts, differential counts, haemoglobin estimation, coagulation testing, and other specialised analyses.
- Use, calibrate, and look after haematology analysers and other laboratory instruments.
- Make blood smears, stains, and slides for microscopic review.
- Spot unusual cells or patterns and escalate them to the pathologist for further examination.
- Enter and update laboratory findings accurately in patient records and laboratory information systems.
- Follow all biosafety, infection control, and biohazard-handling requirements without exception.
- Take part in internal quality checks, external quality assessments, and proficiency testing activities.
- Track laboratory stock such as reagents, consumables, and equipment, and notify the team when supplies or assets are running low or need attention.
- Support documentation work related to NABL and NABH standards.
Qualifications and experience
Applicants should hold a Diploma or BSc in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT), or an equivalent qualification. A minimum of 3+ years of experience in a haematology laboratory is preferred, ideally in a hospital environment. The role calls for a solid grasp of haematology concepts, laboratory methods, and instrumentation, along with familiarity with modern equipment.
Work style and competencies
Successful candidates will demonstrate strong communication, teamwork, and close attention to detail. They should be comfortable working in high-pressure situations and responding to emergency cases when required. Basic computer literacy and proficiency with laboratory information systems are also important, as is a strong commitment to confidentiality and ethical laboratory practice.
