Intermittent Interpreter - Spanish

Role overview

The County of San Diego is hiring an Intermittent Interpreter for Spanish language coverage in the court system. This role supports courtroom proceedings by interpreting simultaneously and consecutively during testimony, oral arguments, and motions, and may also be used in customer service interactions or for sight translation when needed.

This is an on-call court position with no fixed schedule. Work is assigned based on daily operational needs, and the interpreter may be offered assignments at any court location. Intermittent Interpreters can accept or decline work during the calendar year without limit. The position includes eligibility for Social Security and Workers' Compensation coverage.

Pay

The hourly rate is $47.20. There is a four-hour paid minimum when the interpreter agrees to remain available for a full half-day session, and any time beyond that minimum is paid hourly.

Minimum qualifications

Applicants must already hold a current Spanish Certified Court Interpreter credential issued by the Judicial Council of California at the time they apply. Candidates without this certification will not be considered.

Proof of certification

Applicants need to provide proof of Spanish certification from the Judicial Council of California. A PDF or JPEG copy of the Certified Court Interpreter certificate may be uploaded in the Attachments section of the application, or a copy may be mailed or hand-delivered to Human Resources.

Selection criteria

Selection may consider the applicant’s ability to deliver accurate simultaneous and consecutive interpretation in Spanish, build effective working relationships with court staff and law enforcement, protect confidential information, and remain neutral and unbiased while interpreting.

Additional information

Applicants who are not yet certified are directed to the Judicial Council of California’s Court Interpreters Program for certification information. The Superior Court does not run the certification process itself.
