Role overview
This contract role is for an experienced illustrator who can create a tender children’s picture book with expressive, cinematic artwork. The project calls for 26 full-color interior spreads plus a cover, all prepared at 8.5” x 8.5”. The visual direction should feel warm, emotionally engaging, and refined, with believable character proportions and gentle cinematic lighting so the finished book connects with both children and their families. To keep the narrative visually consistent, the illustrator will be given character sheets, scene breakdowns, and reference imagery. The selection process begins with a paid test illustration to confirm style compatibility.
Project scope
- Produce 26 full-color interior illustrations and one cover illustration in a cinematic, painterly approach suited to a children’s book.
- Maintain strong character continuity and clear emotional storytelling across the entire set of artwork.
- Work from supplied character references, scene notes, and visual materials to preserve consistency.
- Deliver print-ready artwork in the required 8.5” x 8.5” format.
- Complete a paid trial illustration as part of the hiring process.
- Revise artwork based on feedback, within the agreed scope and timeline.
- Ensure all submitted artwork is original and created without AI generation.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience in children’s book illustration, or comparable work using a realistic, painterly, cinematic style.
- A portfolio that shows emotional depth, consistent characters, and high-quality finishing.
- Comfort using digital illustration tools and workflows that support print-ready output.
- Ability to interpret detailed creative briefs and translate references into compelling visuals.
- Strong communication habits and willingness to respond well to feedback.
- Commitment to producing original artwork that is not AI-generated.
- Availability to work within project deadlines and revision milestones.
