Job summary
This role focuses on non-medical in-home assistance that helps clients remain comfortable, safe, and well supported in their homes. The position also includes companionship, light supervision, and household management duties to maintain a clean, orderly, and secure environment.
Responsibilities
- Support clients with everyday non-medical needs according to the established care plan.
- Offer companionship through conversation, attentive listening, reading aloud, and other social activities that encourage mental engagement and emotional comfort.
- Help maintain a clean, safe, and healthy living space through tasks such as vacuuming, dusting, sweeping, mopping, bathroom cleaning, and laundering clothing and linens.
- Prepare and serve meals when directed, and ensure the kitchen and dishes are cleaned after meals.
- Assist with practical tasks such as phone calls, letter writing, and accompanying clients on walks or community outings.
- Support clients in taking self-administered medication in line with the company’s medication policy.
- Notice and promptly report changes in a client’s physical, mental, emotional, or home situation to the supervisor.
- Build and maintain respectful, professional communication with clients, families, co-workers, and office staff.
- Take part in training, continuing education, staff meetings, and client conferences when requested.
- Complete service records accurately and submit documentation on time according to policy.
- Use tools and supplies safely and appropriately.
- Protect client confidentiality at all times.
- Carry out other related duties as reasonably assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification must be maintained.
- A Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check is required and must be renewed every year.
- Must meet the employer’s standards for criminal background checks, driving record checks where applicable, and professional/personal reference checks.
- Willingness to undergo random drug and alcohol testing is required.
- Reliable transportation is necessary, along with dependable attendance and punctuality.
- A valid driver’s license and automobile insurance are required when driving is part of the assignment.
- Completion of the company’s training and orientation program is mandatory.
- Ability to learn and follow company policies and procedures.
- Must be able to work in a home setting with limited direct supervision.
- Strong working relationships with administrative staff, clients, and family members are expected.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and document services provided.
- Genuine desire to help others, along with high standards of honesty and integrity.
- Work may involve exposure to blood or other body fluids in a client home and automobile setting.
- The role requires regular physical activity including driving, assisting clients, and light housekeeping.
- Must be able to stand, sit, walk, bend, talk, and hear regularly.
- Must be able to reach and lift up to 12 kg (25 lbs).
- Manual dexterity and strength in both hands are required.
Compensation
Starting pay is 19.00 per hour.
Work environment
The position is based in clients’ homes and may also involve travel by automobile. There is a possible risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious diseases.
