Role overview

Mercury is a leading European contractor delivering complex engineering and construction projects for major global organisations. The company supports advanced technologies and critical infrastructure across sectors such as enterprise data centres, hyperscale data centres, life sciences, advanced technology, and fire protection.

This graduate opportunity is part of Mercury’s development programme, created for future leaders who want to contribute to demanding projects while building a long-term career. The programme is designed to develop practical capability through structured learning, expert-led courses, masterclasses, and real project exposure in an international setting.

Since 2009, the programme has trained more than 360 graduates. It runs for eighteen months and includes both internal and external subject-matter-led training. Participants also complete a group research project, working in small teams of four or five on a strategic business topic assigned by senior management and presenting their findings to leadership.

Key responsibilities

The graduate quantity surveyor will support commercial and contractual activities across projects, including documentation, cost control, and client coordination.

  • Prepare contract documentation and related paperwork.
  • Draft post-contract enquiries.
  • Review and assess contract variations.
  • Prepare and agree schedules.
  • Manage the financial and contractual position of subcontractor accounts.
  • Issue contractual notices and assess claims relating to loss, expense, and acceleration.
  • Produce fast, accurate, competitive, and commercially sound estimates for enquiries.
  • Work closely with clients, main contractors, and internal teams.
  • Provide regular updates to management on competitor movements, market conditions, and other relevant commercial trends.
  • Carry out additional duties connected to the role as required.

Requirements

Candidates should bring strong academic credentials and the personal qualities needed to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced construction environment.

  • Ideally a 2:1 honours degree, or an expected 2:1 result.
  • Level 8 qualification or a relevant bachelor’s degree.
  • Clear and effective communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, organisational, and coordination abilities.
  • A practical, adaptable, and solution-focused mindset.
  • Comfort working in a team-based environment.
  • Attention to quality and presentation in all work outputs.
  • Flexibility to travel when needed.
  • Energetic and enthusiastic approach.
  • Construction industry experience or a trade background would be an advantage.
