Position Overview
The Department of Public Works for the City of Lynchburg is looking for an experienced custodian to handle routine semi-skilled and physically demanding cleaning work across City-owned buildings. This is a full-time onsite role with an early-morning schedule of 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Core Duties
- Support the safety, security, upkeep, and routine care of City facilities while delivering strong customer service.
- Coordinate with internal teams and outside contacts to help keep services running smoothly.
- Communicate professionally with a wide range of people, including individuals who may be confused, upset, or frustrated.
- Carry out custodial cleaning duties in multiple buildings, including sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, stripping, waxing, and buffing floors.
- Clean carpets using extraction equipment and spot-clean carpeted areas and upholstered furniture.
- Operate wet/dry vacuums and clean/disinfect toilets, urinals, lavatories, windows, walls, woodwork, and bathroom fixtures, including the use of ladders when needed.
- Restock soap, towel, and toilet tissue dispensers.
- Collect and dispose of trash from inside and outside assigned buildings and gather paper for recycling.
- Dust furniture, partitions, ledges, moldings, and venetian blinds.
- Help clean parking decks and maintain sidewalks and steps around assigned facilities.
- Lock and unlock doors, deactivate alarms when assigned, and report anything unusual to a supervisor.
- Monitor the cleanliness of stairwells, elevators, restrooms, hallways, and meeting rooms.
- Assist building users with access to services.
- Move, set up, and configure tables, chairs, and other items for meetings, assemblies, and off-site events.
- Track supply, material, and equipment needs and report inventory shortages.
- Retrieve and deliver supplies, furniture, equipment, mail, correspondence, and special event materials to designated locations, including Council Members’ homes.
- Assemble and disassemble basic office furniture and equipment using written directions.
- Support office relocations and respond to work requests through email, phone, and written communication.
- Lead small crews during snow removal and other inclement-weather duties when required.
- Display flags, hang pictures, train new staff in cleaning standards, and report repair needs beyond custodial authority.
- Perform other related tasks that directly or indirectly support City services, including special assignments during emergencies or when a State of Emergency is declared.
Supervision
This role may oversee custodians and/or temporary workers.
Qualifications
A high school diploma or GED is required, along with substantial experience in light maintenance and custodial work. Candidates should also have experience using a computer and working with Microsoft Office, Lotus Notes, and the internet, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
Applicants must be able to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, maintenance guidance, and procedures; write routine reports and correspondence; and speak effectively in front of customers or staff. The position also calls for basic arithmetic skills, sound judgment in routine situations, and a tactful, cooperative communication style.
Additional requirements include a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, successful criminal and reference checks, and completion of IS100 and IS700 NIMS training within 90 days of hire. Higher-level NIMS training may also be required depending on the needs of the role.
Physical and Work Conditions
The job regularly requires standing, using hands and fingers to operate equipment, and reaching with the arms. It frequently involves walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, and may require lifting or moving up to 50 pounds. The work may occasionally involve fumes, airborne particles, caustic or toxic chemicals, and outdoor weather exposure.

Candidates must also confirm whether they can work the standard shift of 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., whether they can work overtime for snow removal, heavy cleaning, or emergencies, and whether they agree to the driving-record release process.
