About the Program

The City of Farmington Hills is hiring motivated, dependable people to serve as Nature Camp Coordinators for its Unplugged Summer Camps. In this role, you will help shape a fun, safe, and memorable summer for children and teens by leading activities, supporting camper well-being, and taking an active part in swimming and outdoor programming.

This position is centered on creating a welcoming camp atmosphere where campers feel included, supported, and excited to participate. It is also a hands-on role that requires strong supervision, participation in water-based activities, and the ability to manage a variety of camp situations with professionalism and care.

Compensation and Incentives

• Pay can reach up to $800 per week, with the possibility of earning more in specialty camp assignments.
• Many roles begin at $14 per hour or higher.

• Camp staff generally follow steady schedules, with evenings and weekends free during the summer.

Key Duties

In this position, you will be expected to keep campers safe, engaged, and supported throughout the day while helping deliver a high-quality camp experience.

You will supervise campers and staff during activities, meals, and unstructured time; enforce camp expectations; and communicate clearly with the broader team to help resolve concerns quickly and effectively.

The role also includes leading games, crafts, team-building exercises, discussions, and other age-appropriate activities. You will work alongside camp instructors to build a varied and engaging schedule, and you will create weekly lesson plans for both learning and recreation.

Because this is a nature-focused program, you will spend significant time outdoors with campers. Activities may include hikes, exploration, nature discovery, experiments, STEM-based programming, wilderness skills, and water-based games. You will also help organize and carry out swimming and other water-related activities.

Additional responsibilities include building positive relationships with campers, encouraging teamwork and participation, attending staff meetings and training sessions, and keeping camp leadership informed about incidents, concerns, progress, and any needed adjustments.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a high school diploma, with some college experience preferred. Students studying education, recreation, environmental science, or a related field are especially encouraged to apply.

Prior experience working with children in a camp or recreational environment is required. A background in education, recreation, or a related discipline is preferred.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old and should have a strong interest in nature and the outdoors. CPR and First Aid certification is required before the camp season begins, unless the applicant is willing to obtain it in advance.

Successful candidates will bring a positive attitude, patience, strong communication skills, interpersonal strength, flexibility, and solid problem-solving ability.

Work Schedule and Physical Requirements

The role requires 35+ hours per week, Monday through Friday, from June through August 2026.

Physical work for this job includes standing, sitting, kneeling, walking, talking, seeing, hearing, and using hands or fingers to reach and handle objects. Employees must be able to lift or move up to 50 pounds and work outdoors for long periods in varying weather conditions.
