Blown Film Machine Operator & Technician

Role overview

Seven Industries Limited, a Jamaican producer of tissue paper, garbage bags, non-woven bags, and hygiene products, is looking for an experienced Machine Operator & Technician to independently run and support its blown film extrusion line, bottom seal bag-making machine, and flexographic printing equipment. This person will be expected to keep production moving at the required quality and output levels, and to quickly identify and correct equipment issues when breakdowns occur.

Blown film extrusion line

• Prepare and start the mono-extruder blown film line for each production run, including resin loading, die setup, and bubble formation.
• Track and fine-tune operating conditions such as barrel-zone melt temperature, blow-up ratio, frost line height, haul-off speed, winder tension, film gauge, and width.
• Identify and resolve typical film defects such as TD splitting from unstable bubbles, gauge variation that leads to winder wrinkles, die lines, fish eyes, gels, pinholes, blocking, and poor clarity.
• Carry out screw and barrel purging, die cleaning, and screen pack changes as needed.
• Complete first-piece checks on thickness, width, and weight per unit area, and record the results.
• Work with the Chinese equipment supplier for remote technical assistance when required.

Bottom seal bag-making machine

• Set up the bottom seal machine for each SKU, including film roll loading, sealing jaw alignment, temperature configuration, and cut-length setup.
• Run the machine at the required speed while maintaining proper seal quality and correct bag dimensions.
• Detect and fix seal-related problems such as weak or incomplete bottom seals, overheating that causes burn-through or film distortion, misalignment, skewed cuts, and uneven perforation.
• Replace jaws and blades, adjust timing belts, and check sensors when necessary.
• Perform in-process checks for seal strength, bag measurements, and print placement.
• Reduce film waste during startup and changeovers.

Flexographic printing

• Install flexo plates and prepare ink systems for each printing run.
• Blend and manage solvent-based or water-based inks to reach the required viscosity and colour match.
• Set and maintain print registration across all colours.
• Correct print issues including misregistration, colour shifts, streaking, pinholing, ink starvation, smearing, offsetting, and ink bleeding.
• Clean and store anilox rolls, doctor blades, and impression cylinders correctly.
• Check drying and curing performance and confirm that print adhesion meets customer expectations.

Maintenance and documentation

• Follow preventive maintenance plans for all three machines.
• Keep a downtime and fault record that shows the cause of each issue, the corrective action taken, and the repair time.
• Monitor use of consumables such as resins, inks, plates, blades, and sealing components.
• Highlight repeat faults and suggest improvements to the engineering team.
• Train junior operators on safe operation and quality standards.

Qualifications and experience

The ideal candidate should have at least 3 years of experience running a blown film extrusion line, whether mono-layer or multilayer, and should be able to solve blown film defects without step-by-step supervision. Experience with bottom seal or T-shirt bag-making machines is also required, along with practical knowledge of flexographic printing, including plate mounting, ink handling, and registration control. The role calls for someone who can read machine manuals, wiring diagrams, and process parameter sheets, and who has enough mechanical ability to replace belts, bearings, blades, and sealing parts. A strong eye for detail and quality is essential so defects are caught before they turn into scrap.

Preferred background

Exposure to PLC-based machine controls is an advantage. A technical or vocational certificate in electrical, mechanical, or plastics technology is also preferred.

Working conditions

This is a manufacturing-floor role that involves standing for long periods, lifting, and exposure to heat from extrusion equipment. Shift work may be needed as production grows. PPE must be worn at all times on the production floor.
