Role Overview
The City of Kings Mountain is seeking a Library Assistant for the Cultural Enrichment - Library Services department. This position reports to the Library Services Supervisor and involves strong public interaction in a library setting. The role supports circulation, advisory services, technology help, and other day-to-day library operations. While most work takes place indoors, some assistance with programs may occur off site. The schedule can vary based on library needs, and the position is evaluated on service quality and accuracy.
Core Duties
- Deliver friendly, effective service as part of a team.
- Handle circulation tasks such as registering patrons, checking materials and equipment in and out, clearing book drops, collecting fines and fees, and making change.
- Prepare library items for use by processing books, periodicals, and audio-visual materials; repair damaged materials when needed; and apply barcodes, labels, and covers.
- Create new customer accounts, issue library cards, and update patron records.
- Carry out item-level cataloging when the organization requires it.
- Offer reader guidance, general information, and technology support in person and online.
- Provide intermediate-level technical assistance to patrons.
- Help customers navigate the library and support patrons with disabilities.
- Apply library rules and policies related to circulation, conduct, donations, child safety, and internet use.
- Sort, package, and mail materials as part of resource sharing with libraries across North Carolina.
- Answer phones, share information, route calls, take messages, and notify patrons when reserved items are available.
- Assist with adult programming when needed.
- Maintain shelves and keep assigned areas organized.
- Support patrons using copiers, fax machines, scanners, and other library services.
- Take on related duties as assigned.
- Set up and maintain book, art, or other displays.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Practical understanding of library procedures, materials, and standard practices.
- Ability to read English and sort items in alphanumeric order.
- Capacity to learn the Dewey Decimal System.
- Self-direction and initiative in completing assignments.
- Strong interpersonal skills, courtesy, and tact when working with staff and the public.
- Ability to work accurately, efficiently, and with good time management, including dependable attendance.
- Working knowledge of library collections, reader’s advisory, circulation procedures, and research support.
- Comfort using technology at an intermediate level.
- Understanding of the purpose and structure of a public library system.
- Ability to provide highly personalized customer service and collaborate effectively in a team setting.
- Ability to learn library databases and train the public on how to use them.
- Accurate typing skills at a reasonable speed.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
- Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
Physical and Work Conditions
This job requires the ability to perform physical tasks such as climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, reaching, grasping, fingering, talking, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, hearing, and repetitive motion. The role involves pushing and pulling carts up to 100 pounds, lifting boxes up to 25 pounds, and carrying 20 pounds up two flights of stairs. Candidates must also have the visual ability to keep records, read book spines, count cash, and operate a computer. Work is primarily indoors, though some programming may take place off site. The position involves continuous standing, may include interaction with behavioral issues, and requires varied work hours including evenings and weekends that may change from time to time.
Education and Experience
A high school diploma is required. A bachelor’s degree is preferred. Applicants must have at least 1 year of library experience, with preference given to candidates who have substantial experience working in a library.

Compensation
Hiring range: $34,864 to $43,580.
