About the role
This position is part of the Google Photos team in Sydney, where the focus is on improving how users back up, organize, view, and share their photos on the web. The team works on strategic product features and also contributes to architectural improvements that help shape the future of Google Photos. The web experience is especially important because it is often the first place users go to curate their libraries and form their first impression of the product.
As a software engineer in this role, you will work on a project that is important to Google’s needs and may have opportunities to move across teams or projects as the business evolves. The role calls for versatility, leadership, and enthusiasm for solving new problems across the full stack.
Minimum qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent hands-on professional experience.
- At least 2 years of software development experience using one or more programming languages, or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree in an industry environment.
- At least 2 years of experience with data structures and algorithms in academic or industry settings.
Preferred qualifications
- Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, or another related technical discipline.
- 2 years of experience building web software products.
- Experience with code health, system health, root-cause diagnosis, issue resolution, and software test engineering.
- Background in developing accessible technologies.
Responsibilities
- Develop production-quality code for product or system features.
- Take part in design reviews, or lead them, with teammates and stakeholders to compare technical options.
- Review other developers’ code and give feedback on style, correctness, testability, efficiency, and adherence to standards.
- Update documentation or learning materials and revise them as products or programs change and as user feedback comes in.
- Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve product or system issues by analyzing root causes and assessing their effect on hardware, networks, services, and overall quality.
