Role overview

This permanent Community Builder position in Leeds is a people-centred community development role supporting members of the armed forces community to participate, connect and help shape positive local change. The post is based remotely in Leeds with travel required across the UK.

You will play a practical, relationship-focused part in bringing residents, veterans, community organisations and local groups together so they can collaborate, build trust and turn ideas into community-led action. The role suits someone who is energised by engagement work, partnership building and helping local communities thrive.

What the role involves

Working within the Community Development team, you will support veterans—especially those who may experience barriers to engagement—to take a more active role in their communities. You will be visible in the local area, foster trusted relationships and create opportunities for dialogue, collaboration and shared action.

Typical activity includes meeting veterans, local residents and groups to explore local strengths, interests and priorities; linking people with common goals; helping communities move from conversation into practical projects; and working with partner organisations to strengthen local networks. The work combines engagement, facilitation and collaboration to deliver lasting impact.

Working pattern and travel

Community Development work is flexible and shaped by local need. Some evening and weekend work is expected, and an example two-week pattern is available for illustration only. The actual schedule will vary based on community priorities.

You must live within a 30-minute commute of your allocated locality and travel regularly across the wider area. Travel expenses are covered. Occasional travel to other UK locations will also be required for meetings and events, including the charity’s annual all-colleagues in-person event.

Requirements

Applicants should bring strong relationship-building ability and a genuine interest in helping communities connect and flourish. Experience may come from community development or from related backgrounds such as housing, social care, education, youth work or the charity sector.

You will need to communicate clearly, inspire action, work well with a wide range of people and organisations, manage your workload independently and maintain effective working relationships across different groups.

The charity is looking for candidates who have a Community Development qualification and/or relevant transferable skills and experience, an understanding of or willingness to learn Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD), excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a proven record of working successfully with partners and stakeholders, and strong organisational and IT skills.

Additional information

The working arrangement is 35 hours per week across 5 days, Monday to Sunday. Core days are Monday to Friday, but flexibility is essential because regular evening and weekend work will be needed. Hours will be arranged so that 70 hours are completed over each two-week period.

A valid full UK driving licence and access to a reliable vehicle with business insurance are required. A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will also be necessary.

Team and culture

You will join a collaborative Community Development team that works across local communities to build relationships, develop partnerships and support community-led activity. Community Development Managers and Community Builders work closely together and share learning to create meaningful local impact.

Benefits

The role offers a sense of purpose in a team that values equality, diversity and inclusion. Benefits include 29 days of annual leave plus 8 bank holidays, with birthday leave in addition; the option to buy or sell up to 5 days of leave each year; free health scheme access from day one with discounts on dental, opticians, massages and more, plus an upgrade option; 3 volunteer days per year; and a salary sacrifice pension with an 8% employer contribution, a minimum 3% employee contribution and life insurance of up to 4x salary for active members.

Pay and contract

The salary is up to £33,995 per annum. This is a permanent full-time role.

Application note

The vacancy may be closed early if a high number of strong applications are received. The organisation welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. Closing date: 23 July 2026.
