Role Overview
This contract opportunity is for a senior data engineer who brings strong Azure data engineering experience and, ideally, hands-on exposure to Fabric. The assignment is for 3 months and may be extended. The role is based in Wellington, and the person must be located in New Zealand and have lived there for at least 5 years to meet government security clearance requirements.
What You Will Do
- Own the design, support, and delivery of advanced technical solutions on Azure data platforms.
- Take the lead on end-to-end planning, setup, and implementation of Azure data services.
- Apply infrastructure and automation know-how to deliver data warehousing, data function, and full lifecycle analytics solutions.
- Create solutions using Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, Azure Data Warehousing, Data Lakes, and App Insights.
- Partner with business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into practical solutions aligned to data domains and technology constraints.
- Support data warehouse activities including data manipulation, migration, and integration.
- Provision, update, support, and administer complex Microsoft PaaS SQL Server environments, including high-availability setups such as SQL clusters, Always On, and Availability Groups.
- Assist with moving on-premises services into Azure cloud platforms.
- Use Log Analytics Workspace and diagnostic settings for logging and monitoring.
- Support both internal and external engineers with data platform configuration for ingestion, transformation, extraction, and cleansing.
Candidate Profile
- Strong experience in Azure data engineering, including solution design and delivery; Fabric experience is preferred.
- Ability to interpret business needs and craft effective solutions using deep Azure data engineering expertise.
- Solid understanding of the Azure data platform, including cloud analytics frameworks, data cataloging, data lineage, and machine learning.
- Hands-on background with Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Warehousing, Azure Synapse, Azure Databricks, data modelling, Azure SQL, big data, data lakes, App Insights, and Fabric.
- Experience with traditional Microsoft BI tools such as SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS.
- Strong database knowledge, including SQL Server, Azure SQL DB/MI, and application services configuration.
- Practical exposure to Azure DevOps, automation, DevOps integration, and DataOps.
- Working knowledge of broader Azure resources, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, ETL, Cosmos DB, Event Hub, scorecards, reporting and dashboards, service-oriented architectures, and programming.
- Exposure to T-SQL, Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, Python, Scala, Impala, R, and Power BI is desirable.
- Must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident with more than 5 years of residency in New Zealand, making the candidate eligible for government security clearance.
- Must be available within 2 weeks to start a 3-month contract on a daily rate.
- Can be based anywhere in New Zealand.
