About the company
Hammond Power Solutions (HPS) is a global transformer manufacturer based in Guelph, Ontario, and recognized as a North American leader in custom dry-type transformer design and production. For more than a century, the company has supported electrical power needs across demanding applications such as mining, rectifiers, drives, traction, wind, solar, and other specialized power systems. HPS is currently hiring a Power Winder for its Walkerton manufacturing site.
Role overview
This position supports the production teams in Control, Distribution, Reactor, and Potted Assembly by supplying transformer coils according to production requirements.
Key responsibilities
- Choose the winding kit to work on based on the schedule or direction from the team lead or supervisor.
- Check that each kit contains the correct materials and that everything needed is available before starting.
- Using the winding order MIP, prepare the machine by loading the proper wire or foil and setting up the power winding equipment.
- Reset the counter to match the required number of turns indicated on the MIP.
- Produce all coils to specification, and obtain prior approval from manufacturing engineering for any deviation.
- Run the first coil sample to confirm the setup is correct before proceeding with the full job.
- Carry out ratio testing on all first-off coils and whenever required by the Ratio/Polarity SPI.
- Confirm that completed coils meet all dimensional and tolerance requirements on the drawings and specifications.
Quality expectations
- Complete ratio testing for every first-off coil and whenever additional testing is required by the specification.
- Verify that all parts match the applicable specifications and drawings.
- Report any quality concerns to QA through the proper process and forms.
- Complete the MOS engineering feedback form for any MIP or specification-related issues as required.
Education and training
- Grade 12 / high school diploma is required.
- Training or education in manufacturing or electrical principles would be considered an advantage.
- Prior manufacturing experience is an asset.
- Basic understanding of electrical theory is beneficial.
- Ability to interpret mechanical and electrical drawings and schematics is an asset.
- Working knowledge of both metric and imperial measurement systems is required.
- Hoist training is required.
Skills and equipment
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, including HPR (High Performance Relationships) training.
- Comfort using MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Familiarity with office equipment such as computers, photocopiers, and printers.
- Ability to use measuring and calculation tools such as calculators, rulers, tape measures, and scales is an asset.
- Experience using winding machines, hand tools, power tools, brazing and soldering equipment, and hoists is an asset.
