Opportunity
This position is with a rapidly scaling digital marketing agency operating in a sensitive, high-risk segment of the digital economy. The business manages roughly 20 brands and produces just under seven figures in monthly revenue. Growth has been strong, but the finance function has not kept pace.
This is not a statutory accounting or tax compliance role. Those responsibilities are already covered by an accountant and a tax advisor. Instead, this is an operational finance leadership role focused on management reporting, performance insight, and decision support. The aim is to give two non-finance founders clear, practical answers in plain language about profitability, revenue sources, cash leakage, and the priorities that need attention first.
The business currently lacks consistent management accounting, a dependable monthly profit and loss statement, and a unified view of costs, which are spread across payment processors and individual knowledge. This would be the first dedicated finance hire, joining at a messy starting point and building a clean, simple, decision-useful finance system from the ground up.
The emphasis is not on producing large or overly detailed reports for their own sake. The priority is to create information that leads to action. Simplicity that helps the business make better profit decisions matters more than complexity that only fills a folder.
Core Responsibilities
- Create a single trusted finance source that the wider business can rely on for reporting.
- Build and maintain a dependable monthly close process, management accounts, and a P&L the team can actually trust.
- Develop cash-flow forecasts so leadership understands what is coming next, not only what has already happened.
- Break down profitability by brand and channel to show which parts of the business genuinely generate returns.
- Translate financial data into clear inputs that founders, and later a COO, can use to make and validate decisions.
- Measure the results of major decisions after the fact, including whether spend or operational changes improved profit.
- Review the P&L line by line across items such as staff, traffic, software, and subscriptions.
- Spot spend that is leaking value or producing weak returns, then feed those insights back to the team.
- Calculate ROI for people, channels, and tools using real financial numbers.
- Provide founders with a clear view of what cash can be drawn out, what can be reinvested, and what each hire truly costs.
Experience and Working Style
The role calls for at least 10 years in finance, with a minimum of the most recent 5 years at Financial Controller level or another equivalent senior finance leadership position where you were actively running the finance function rather than supporting it in the background. Earlier career experience can be junior-level, but the recent years must reflect senior ownership.
You should also have experience building finance reporting and processes from scratch or overhauling an existing system, not only operating within one that was already mature.
Direct experience presenting numbers to founders, directors, owners, or a COO is important, especially where those numbers were used to shape actions and decisions rather than simply being delivered for someone else to interpret.
The ideal way of working is straightforward and pragmatic. You should be able to explain finance in plain English, answer simple profitability questions directly, stay effective when the starting point is messy, and thrive in a startup-style, high-growth environment rather than a fully established corporate machine.
Keeping things simple should be a guiding principle. The purpose of the numbers is to improve profit decisions, not to impress with complexity. Comfort with modern tools and AI is also important, as the role expects you to use efficient, up-to-date methods without sacrificing accuracy.
Not a Fit If
- You lean on corporate jargon, expensive tools, or additional headcount before you can answer a straightforward question.
- You see the job as producing reports and appearing busy instead of directly answering whether the business is making money and where action is needed.
- You are not comfortable working in an adult or otherwise restricted vertical.
Working Arrangements
- This is a full-time role with a 40-hour workweek.
- The position is fully remote.
Compensation
- The pay range is USD 5,000 to USD 6,000 per month.
- There is potential for an upward compensation review after an initial period for an exceptional hire.
