Role Overview
The DevSecOps Engineer will be responsible for building, automating, and supporting secure, scalable, and resilient infrastructure and delivery pipelines. The role sits in a collaborative, agile environment and requires strong capability in cloud platforms, automation, security practices, and modern DevOps methods.
Depending on project requirements, the role may involve taking ownership of infrastructure and security across the organisation, improving deployment workflows, and integrating security throughout development and operations processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Build automation and operational processes that help teams deploy, manage, scale, and monitor applications across data centre and cloud environments.
- Investigate and resolve platform and application issues, including participation in on-call escalations for major incidents.
- Own infrastructure and security solutions end to end within the organisation.
- Set up and maintain monitoring solutions to measure performance, usage, and infrastructure health.
- Create and manage configuration management systems that support continuity and automate disaster recovery.
- Provision virtual machines, databases, application containers, and software licences for development teams.
- Configure, maintain, and improve CI/CD pipelines, including change management and release workflows.
- Write scripts and automation utilities to support builds, integration, and deployments in development and production environments.
- Automate configuration management for development, QA, and production workloads.
- Design, implement, tune, and observe automation systems to remove bottlenecks and improve service availability.
- Apply security controls aligned with industry standards to protect data and infrastructure.
- Plan, implement, and monitor system security architecture, including threat and risk assessments.
- Carry out vulnerability reviews, system hardening, and security troubleshooting.
- Ensure security configurations and controls are implemented using secure-by-design practices.
Requirements
- A degree or diploma in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
- Strong interest in automation, standardisation, and infrastructure/security best practices.
- Solid knowledge of SDLC, TDD, CI, and CD.
- Experience with highly available, high-performance, and highly secure multi-data-centre systems and hybrid cloud setups.
- Proficiency in at least three scripting or programming languages such as Bash, PowerShell, Python, and Go.
- Hands-on experience with Git and branching strategies used in modern development workflows.
- Experience with public cloud services such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
- Familiarity with infrastructure provisioning tools such as Ansible, Terraform, Puppet, and Vagrant.
- Practical experience with virtualisation technologies such as KVM, VMware, and Hyper-V.
- Strong understanding of containers and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Knowledge of CNCF-related tools such as Prometheus, Helm, ArgoCD, Istio, Gatekeeper, and Crossplane.
- Experience with monitoring and observability platforms.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve complex issues across infrastructure and application layers.
- Experience working with CI/CD platforms and DevOps tools such as GitLab, Jenkins, Bitbucket, and ArgoCD.
- Experience with disaster recovery planning, backup, and restore processes.
- Knowledge of RPM-based packaging and deployment.
- Experience embedding security controls into CI/CD pipelines and cloud-native systems.
- Hands-on exposure to security testing, vulnerability scanning, and system hardening.
- Familiarity with enterprise security tools such as HashiCorp Vault, Elasticsearch Enterprise, Tenable, HP Fortify, Sonatype Nexus IQ, and AWS security services.
- Strong knowledge of networking fundamentals, including firewalls, subnets, routing, and access controls.
- Experience conducting security assessments in government or other highly regulated environments.
- Security certifications such as CREST, CISSP, CISM, or relevant cloud security credentials are an advantage.
- Experience supporting a successful DevSecOps transformation is preferred.
- Knowledge of compliance and security frameworks such as ISO 27001, NIST, and CIS benchmarks.
- Hands-on understanding of API security, secrets management, and zero-trust architectures.
- Knowledge of service mesh security solutions such as Istio or Linkerd.
