Role overview

Stats NZ is seeking Data Analysts to join its Insights and Statistics teams. These are fixed-term opportunities based in either Pōneke (Wellington) or Ōtautahi (Christchurch).

The work is nationally important and helps set the benchmark for how trusted data is produced and used across public and private sectors. The roles will suit people who are curious, reflective, and motivated by meaningful impact, especially those interested in improving how economic statistics and insights are created for Aotearoa.

What the role involves

You will contribute to the modernisation of core economic statistics by helping identify ways to simplify processes, connect data across systems more effectively, and use automation and AI where appropriate.

The role includes taking ownership of specific pieces of work while also contributing to wider improvements in systems, processes, and insights that support decisions by government, iwi, businesses, and communities. Your work will help define good practice in data stewardship across Aotearoa.

A major part of the job focuses on the analytical front end — using strong conceptual thinking together with practical application to influence how data is structured, interpreted, and produced, rather than only working on final outputs.

On a day-to-day basis, you will work with data, contribute to statistical products, and help ensure outputs are accurate, useful, and delivered with confidence. You will also support the growth of team capability by sharing knowledge and improving ways of working.

Key duties

• Support the creation and ongoing improvement of high-quality statistical products.
• Examine data from core releases and datasets to spot trends, understand drivers, and develop insights that can guide future decisions.
• Maintain accuracy and robustness in outputs while helping to build quality into processes over time.
• Work across multiple data sources, systems, and datasets to design more efficient and sustainable ways of working.
• Develop and apply modern methods, tools, and standards that strengthen data production and stewardship.
• Use sound judgement to interpret standards in complex or changing environments.
• Look for opportunities to streamline and automate work, including through emerging tools and AI.
• Contribute to scalable frameworks and approaches that improve consistency, efficiency, and future capability.

Location

You must already be based in Wellington or Christchurch, or be prepared to relocate for these roles.

Salary

The salary range for these positions is $84,027 to $98,855.

What you will bring

We are looking for people with strong analytical ability, good judgement, and a genuine interest in using economic data to support decisions. You should be comfortable working through complexity and uncertainty, and able to turn data into clear and meaningful outputs.

You should also be a strong conceptual thinker who can step back, see the bigger picture, and help shape the approach to work rather than simply complete assigned tasks.
