Crime Analyst

Overview

BART is hiring a Crime Analyst to support public safety across the Bay Area transit system. This role is geared toward an analytical professional who can turn complex crime and intelligence information into clear, useful insights that help guide prevention, investigations, deployment planning, and operational decisions.

The position is part of the BART Police Department and supports a mission focused on maintaining a safe transit environment, reducing crime through visible and proactive policing, and building public trust through partnership with stakeholders and the communities served.

Compensation

This is a union-represented role under the BART Police Officers' Association (BPOA). Pay ranges from Step 1 at $45.95 per hour to Step 5 at $55.14 per hour. External hires begin at Step 1.

Work Schedule and Location

This position is based in Oakland, CA and must be performed on site. Remote work and telework are not available. The schedule may include varied shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime, with days off assigned as needed.

Key Responsibilities

The Crime Analyst will work closely with command staff, investigators, patrol personnel, and outside law enforcement partners to support intelligence-led policing and data-driven operations. The role involves generating analytical products, identifying crime patterns and emerging threats, and helping the department respond to public safety issues across the transit system.

The selection process may include a skills or performance demonstration, written exam, panel interview, individual interview, and other steps required under the applicable bargaining agreement.

Review stages may include background pre-screening, minimum qualifications screening, oral board interview, chief's interview or designee, and investigative background review.

Selected candidates must show a work history demonstrating reliability and dependability, provide any required documentation, prove authorization to work in the United States, complete a pre-employment medical exam tied to the essential job duties, and pass an extensive background check, credit check, and polygraph examination. Current full-time BART Police Department employees are exempt from these extra evaluations unless the role specifically requires them.

If a candidate advances into the investigative background phase, documents such as naturalization or citizenship papers, birth certificates, school transcripts, selective service proof, DMV driving history, auto insurance proof, marriage or divorce certificates if relevant, and POST certificates if applicable may be requested.
