Role overview

The Clinical Project Manager plays a central role in delivering clinical trials and coordinating with clinical teams to help bring new medicines to patients sooner. This position is part of the core project team and is responsible for ensuring clinical studies are delivered in line with contractual commitments, SOPs, internal policies, and established practices.

The role is centered on execution, productivity, quality, customer satisfaction, and strong financial performance. In some cases, the project lead may manage studies independently, using therapeutic knowledge and the organization’s solutions to support operational excellence and strategic direction for customers.

What you will do

  • Oversee delivery and day-to-day management of smaller, less complex regional studies.
  • Build integrated study management plans together with the core project team.
  • Take responsibility for executing clinical studies, or assigned parts of them, according to contract terms while balancing speed, quality, and cost, and ensuring consistent use of approved tools, training materials, and standard procedures.
  • Define goals for the core team and/or sub-teams based on the agreed contract, strategy, and operating approach, and communicate objectives clearly while monitoring performance.
  • Work with other internal functions as needed to help achieve milestones and address study challenges or barriers.
  • Track progress against the contract and prepare or present project and sub-team updates proactively to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage risks and contingencies in a proactive manner and lead issue resolution and problem-solving efforts.
  • Support overall quality by spotting quality risks and issues, responding to team concerns, and implementing corrective and preventive actions.
  • Act as the main or backup point of contact for the customer when required, owning key relationships and coordinating with business development representatives as needed.
  • Assemble and lead the cross-functional project team, ensuring collaboration across the core team and supporting milestone delivery.
  • Protect the financial performance of the project.
  • Forecast work and look for opportunities to accelerate activities and bring revenue forward.
  • Recognize scope changes and manage the change control process when necessary.
  • Capture lessons learned and apply proven best practices.
  • Serve as the lead contact for vendors when assigned, including vendor management activities required by the project.
  • Adopt enterprise initiatives and changes, and help promote them when needed.
  • Provide project-related performance input to line managers for team members.
  • Support team growth and mentor less experienced project colleagues on assigned studies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences or a related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience, with substantial exposure to clinical project management.
  • Strong understanding of clinical trial conduct and the ability to apply research regulations, including ICH GCP and relevant local laws, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Experience handling regulatory and ethics requirements in East Africa.
  • Therapeutic knowledge in malaria, sickle cell, and HIV.
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
  • Ability to drive results through others while maintaining quality and timelines, giving feedback, and partnering effectively with cross-functional teams and customers.
  • Strong decision-making skills and the ability to turn complex information into clear action.
  • Good planning, time management, prioritization, and resource coordination abilities.
  • Results-focused mindset with a strong orientation toward delivery and output.
  • Willingness to learn continuously and keep skills and knowledge current.
  • Solid computer and software skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues, managers, and clients.
  • Comfort working across geographies with awareness of cultural differences.
  • Good grasp of project financials, including experience managing contractual obligations and their implications.
  • Only candidates based in the listed location will be considered due to sponsor requirements.
