Role overview

GEMS American Academy in Qatar is seeking a dedicated and energetic professional to join its Elementary School team. The appointment is scheduled to begin on 01 August 2026.

Key responsibilities

  • Promote the GEMS culture of high standards and act in line with the organisation’s core values.
  • Teach the prescribed curriculum with strong, current subject and curriculum knowledge.
  • Design and deliver engaging lessons, using suitable resources and a classroom setup that supports different learning preferences.
  • Maintain clear evidence of planning and preparation when required, and keep accurate records such as schemes of work, yearly plans, attendance, teaching materials and assessment plans.
  • Follow all GEMS policies, procedures and codes of conduct consistently.
  • Support students according to their individual learning needs, using suitable strategies for learners such as late joiners, ESL students, students with lower attainment, and gifted and talented learners.
  • Create, assign, mark and evaluate student work, and use assessment information to track progress, achievement and learning needs.
  • Use media and technology confidently in teaching and learning activities.
  • Encourage students’ overall development and well-being, and guide them on educational matters.
  • Communicate with external stakeholders when necessary, including Ministry of Education officials.
  • Take part in appraisal, performance management and continuing professional development activities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on lesson materials, curriculum planning, study programmes and pastoral support.
  • Contribute to co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, and take leadership where appropriate.
  • Build a positive team culture by sharing ideas, resources and experience with colleagues.
  • Oversee student behaviour safely and appropriately, and help build self-discipline while managing disruption.
  • Model cultural understanding and encourage curiosity, engagement and a love of learning.
  • Support the organisation of school events and functions such as inter-house competitions, concerts, plays and prize days.
  • Meet with and communicate regularly with parents, reflect the GEMS philosophy and core values, and keep families informed while protecting confidentiality.
  • Be willing to give extra effort beyond the standard workday when the role requires it.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as needed.
  • Carry out additional duties assigned by direct or dotted-line managers and supervisors.

Requirements

  • A B.Ed. degree or a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, along with PGCE, PGDE or an equivalent Level 5 teaching qualification.
  • At least 2 years of teaching experience in a relevant subject area or age group.
  • Strong knowledge of how ICT can be used in schools to support teaching and learning.
  • Proven classroom skill, a genuine commitment to teaching and learning, and solid subject expertise.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to build strong relationships with students, colleagues and the wider school community.
  • A UK-enhanced DBS check or an equivalent police clearance is required before appointment.
