Role overview
The Shift Lead supports store operations in the absence of management and helps keep the location ready for customers, deliveries, and daily business. The position combines customer service, cash handling, inventory support, merchandising, and team coordination.
Core duties
- Unlocks and secures the store when management is unavailable, including system startup tasks, cash handling, and preparing the sales floor and stockroom for the day. Also opens the back door to receive deliveries.
- Handles product returns, order cancellations, customer refunds, cash deposits to the safe, and provides change for registers when needed.
- Creates a positive in-store experience by greeting customers and patients, offering help, resolving concerns, and answering questions.
- Demonstrates customer service standards to the team and helps reinforce courteous, proactive service habits.
- Manages store keys and uses them to open and close the location as required.
- Supports warehouse and vendor ordering processes, including reviewing orders and assisting with receiving deliveries through the back door.
- Operates the cash register and records sales accurately, including handling scan errors, price checks, price adjustments, and voids.
- Helps management review order exceptions and supports reverse logistics tasks such as returns and empty-package processing.
- Assists in creating and updating displays for promotions, seasonal setups, super structures, and sale items, as well as resets and revisions.
- Maintains accurate inventory counts across departments, stockroom areas, and overstock locations.
- Helps ensure the outdate program is followed consistently.
- Performs basic pricing work, daily price updates, and signage placement, including any pricing tasks tied to local regulations or compliance rules.
- Supports bookkeeping work such as cash reports, cash counts, ledgers, and bill payments when needed.
- Helps maintain a clean, orderly store and may request repairs for store or system issues when management is absent.
- Supports proper storage and rotation of food and consumable products, including first-in, first-out stock rotation and restocking out-of-stock items.
- Uses working knowledge of store systems and equipment.
- May provide assistance at the pharmacy drive-up window as requested.
- Ensures regulated products are handled in line with state and local requirements.
- Performs bag checks for team members before they leave the store.
- Follows company policies, procedures, and respectful workplace expectations.
- Completes assigned special projects and other duties as needed.
- Acts as a communication link between management and team members when managers are not present, and passes along assigned work.
- Escalates disciplinary matters and customer complaints to management.
Training and development
- Attends required training sessions and completes assigned PPLs.
Qualifications
- At least one year of experience in leadership, supervision, or a retail key-holder role.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently, except where not required by location.
- Preference is given to candidates with knowledge of store inventory control.
- Applicants with arrest or conviction records may still be considered.
- Must obtain and keep valid PTCB certification or a pharmacy license if required by the state.
