Senior Software Engineer - Data Backend (Search Quality)

The Search Quality group is focused on making search results more relevant by applying machine learning, data mining, and strong backend engineering practices. This role is for a data-focused backend engineer who will help design and improve internal systems used to prototype, validate, and scale future search capabilities. You will collaborate with engineers across multiple teams to create a smooth development, testing, and release workflow that supports long-term search goals.

What you will do

• Develop, expand, and maintain backend platforms that enable search prototyping, testing, and scaling.
• Partner with product-oriented backend engineers to build efficient systems for search annotations, recall improvements, and LLM-supported search experiences.
• Collaborate with adjacent engineering teams such as Ads and Market Engineering to deliver aligned backend solutions.
• Help shape and execute the next generation search roadmap with a focus on smarter relevance and better system support.

Requirements

• Strong command of an object-oriented programming language such as Python or Java.
• Hands-on experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, Unix environments, and CI/CD workflows.
• Practical knowledge of AWS tools including S3, Glue, and Athena.
• Background in building and supporting distributed systems at consumer app or web scale.
• Ability to design and maintain APIs such as REST or GraphQL.
• Comfort using profiling, tracing, debugging, and visualization tools to analyze performance.
• Experience coordinating technical requirements across multiple teams.
• Strong written documentation skills.
• Interest in or experience with infrastructure for data-heavy applications.
