Description de l'emploi
Role overview
HMP Erlestoke is looking for an Operational Support Grade (OSG) to help with the everyday running of the prison. This is an active, varied position where you will support a busy environment and work closely with a team that keeps operations safe and efficient.
What the job involves
Your duties may include carrying out security checks at the gate, searching people and items, handling incoming deliveries, overseeing visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The role combines office-based tasks with practical work such as lifting, carrying, and walking escort vehicles across the prison site.
Working pattern
This position involves rotating shifts, including nights and weekends, to help maintain continuous operations.
Who this role suits
You do not need formal qualifications for this post. It may be a strong fit if you communicate clearly, stay composed when pressure is high, use sound judgement, and work well as part of a team.
Career development
This post can be a stepping stone into a wider prison service career. You can build practical understanding of prison operations and may later be able to progress into other roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Pay and benefits
The advertised salary is £30,491. Alongside basic pay, the role includes annual leave, public holidays, apprenticeship access, and a range of Civil Service benefits.
Additional information
Annual leave starts at 25 days on appointment and increases to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata. You will also receive 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays. Other benefits include access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Unlike prison officers, contact with prisoners is limited, although there may be occasional interaction depending on the prison.
