About the company
Gerdau is a global steel producer with operations across 10 countries and a workforce of more than 30,000 people. In North America, the company operates through Gerdau Long Steel North America and Gerdau Specialty Steel North America, supplying long and specialty steel products to the agriculture, energy, industrial, automotive, and manufacturing sectors. Its recycling network and mills support the economy, and the business runs ten mills in the U.S. and three in Canada. Gerdau also uses efficient manufacturing methods, including electric arc furnace technology, to support cleaner steel production.
About the program
This opportunity is part of G. Start, Gerdau's internship program for university students. The program is paid and designed to help develop future technical and leadership talent through project-based work. It is intended to be beneficial for both students and the company, while also reflecting Gerdau's focus on diversity and inclusion.
Role overview
This internship is based in Whitby, Ontario, within the IT Operations department. The position is a full-time, 16-month placement and requires the selected candidate to stay available for the entire duration. The role is fully on-site at 1 Gerdau Court, Whitby, ON, with no remote work option. Candidates should be able to commute to the facility and may need to move around the campus and interact with end users as part of day-to-day duties. In some situations, carrying equipment of up to 30 lbs may also be required.
Program requirements
Applicants should be motivated to learn and grow in a global organization with a long history in the steel industry. The company is looking for people who adapt quickly, develop continuously, and perform strongly in changing environments.
- Students must be entering their third or fourth year of undergraduate study.
- The preferred field of study includes Information Technologies, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related discipline from an accredited college or university.
- Candidates must be returning to full-time studies after the internship ends.
- A strong academic record is preferred, with a GPA of 3.0 or above.
- Applicants with leadership experience in student groups or extracurricular activities are especially valued.
- Candidates must already have legal authorization to work full time in the country of hire without needing sponsorship now or in the future.
- Strong interpersonal ability, written and verbal communication skills, initiative, leadership potential, and problem-solving capability are expected.

Compensation
This is a paid internship with an hourly pay rate of $27.00.
