If qualification is based on education, transcripts will be required. The basic qualification options include either an architecture background or an engineering background:
- Architecture: A bachelor's degree or higher in architecture, or a related field with 60 semester hours in architecture-related coursework, including at least 30 semester hours in architectural design and 6 semester hours each in structural technology, materials and construction methods, and environmental control systems.

This may be shown through an architecture-related curriculum such as architectural engineering, or through experience in an architect's office or architectural work. In the absence of college coursework, 5 years of such experience is required.
- Engineering: A bachelor's degree or higher in engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or a program that includes calculus plus advanced coursework in at least five engineering science/physics areas such as statics, dynamics, strength of materials, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, electrical circuits, materials science, optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
- Engineering alternative: A combination of education, training, or technical experience demonstrating strong grounding in physical and mathematical sciences and a practical understanding of engineering principles.
