Description de l'emploi
About the company
Tokamak Energy is an international business advancing fusion energy and high-temperature superconducting (HTS) technologies. The company partners with governments and industry to develop and commercialise fusion and HTS solutions through innovation and strategic collaboration. A core strength is its complete HTS systems capability, covering everything from design through to manufacturing.
The organisation serves as the Magnet Systems Partner for the UK Government’s STEP Fusion programme under a £70 million contract running to 2029. In this role, it works with UK Fusion Energy to deliver HTS magnet systems for the STEP prototype power plant, while also supporting tokamak systems and plasma integration.
Established in 2009 as a spin-out from the UK Atomic Energy Authority, Tokamak Energy is based in Oxfordshire and has subsidiaries in the United States and Japan. The company employs more than 300 people and has attracted over £280 million in investment.
It operates across three divisions: Fusion, which focuses on fusion technologies, expertise and testbeds including ST40, the world’s highest field spherical tokamak; TE Magnetics, which develops HTS systems for commercial uses such as fusion, power distribution, life sciences and propulsion; and Ridgway Machines, which produces manufacturing equipment for superconducting, electrical and wider energy sectors to help scale HTS products industrially.
Role overview
This is a practical and diverse Electrical Technician position supporting engineering, laboratory and infrastructure work in a fast-moving technical setting. The role spans several projects rather than a single production line, with responsibilities ranging from control systems and power distribution to fault diagnosis and installation work.
The ideal candidate is adaptable, hands-on and confident working with limited supervision. This role suits someone who enjoys solving problems, moving between different environments and building broad electrical engineering experience.
Key responsibilities
- Support the design, arrangement, installation and commissioning of control panels and control systems.
- Build, fit and maintain electrical systems, panels and related equipment.
- Diagnose faults and carry out troubleshooting on control systems, power supplies and electrical infrastructure.
- Work on mains electrical installations, including distribution boards and final circuits.
- Install and maintain cable management systems such as tray, conduit and trunking.
- Install and support data networks together with the associated cabling and equipment.
- Test and commission electrical equipment and site infrastructure.
- Respond quickly to electrical breakdowns and urgent repair needs.
- Work alongside engineers, technicians and contractors on larger projects.
- Keep work areas safe and organised, identify hazards, and ensure tools and materials are ready when needed.
What the role offers
The position is highly varied and is not based in a repetitive production-line setting. It provides exposure to both control systems and mains electrical infrastructure, with work spread across laboratories, workshops and technical sites. The role also involves bespoke systems rather than standard off-the-shelf installations, so problem-solving and adaptability are central to day-to-day success.
Requirements
- Completed an electrical apprenticeship or have equivalent practical training and experience.
- Experience working safely with low-voltage electrical systems.
- Ability to test, trace faults and work with confidence on electrical systems.
- Background in control systems, control panels or similar electrical assemblies.
- Ability to interpret and work from electrical drawings and schematics.
- Strong understanding of health and safety when working with electrical systems.
- Comfortable with hands-on practical work, including varied physical tasks.
- Self-starting, proactive and able to work with limited supervision.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
Preferred experience and qualifications
- 18th Edition certification (BS 7671).
- Inspection and testing qualification (2391).
- Experience in complex or non-standard environments.
- Additional certifications such as MEWP, PASMA, PAT or similar.
- Professional registration, or progress toward it, such as EngTech.
- Previous experience as an electrical technician in engineering or R&D settings.
- Background in industrial environments with exposure to control systems.
Benefits
- Salary of up to £50,000, depending on skills and experience, to be discussed from the start.
- 25 days of annual leave plus bank holidays, along with a discretionary festive shutdown.
- Performance-related rewards, including a discretionary bonus and innovation and merit schemes.
- Share options offering a stake in future company success.
- Pension plus a comprehensive financial protection package, including death-in-service and critical illness cover.
- Health and wellbeing support, including a cash plan and 24/7 assistance.
- Ongoing learning investment with training and career development opportunities.
- The chance to contribute to breakthrough work in fusion energy.
