Position Overview

The African Wildlife Foundation is hiring a Driver/Field Assistant for its Conservation Programs team in Kidepo, Uganda. This role combines safe driving, field logistics, basic vehicle care, and practical support for project and office operations.

What You Will Do

  • Transport project staff, consultants, visitors, and partners to field sites and official meetings in a safe and timely manner.
  • Move project supplies, materials, and equipment to activity locations as needed.
  • Ensure staff and visitors are collected and dropped off according to schedule.
  • Keep accurate records of vehicle use, trip details, mileage, and travel activities.
  • Support field teams during community outreach, trainings, monitoring visits, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Keep the assigned vehicle clean and in good working condition.
  • Carry out checks before and after each trip to identify issues early.
  • Monitor fuel, oil, tyres, brakes, battery, and other key vehicle systems.
  • Report faults or repair needs quickly to the relevant supervisor.
  • Arrange routine servicing and repairs according to internal procedures.
  • Make sure insurance, licences, and other vehicle documents remain valid.
  • Follow road safety laws, traffic regulations, and the organisation’s transport rules at all times.
  • Drive carefully and responsibly, especially when travelling in remote field areas.
  • Handle passengers, project assets, and transported items with discretion and care.
  • Support safety and safeguarding measures during field work.
  • Help organise transport and logistics for meetings, workshops, trainings, and field activities.
  • Deliver and collect documents, office supplies, and official correspondence.
  • Carry out procurement-related errands and other office tasks when assigned.

Role Requirements

  • At least a secondary school diploma or an equivalent qualification.
  • A valid driving licence with no issues and a minimum of 5 years’ professional driving experience.
  • Experience gained in NGOs, development organisations, or private sector institutions is required.
  • Prior work in rural or field-based project settings is strongly preferred.
  • Background supporting donor-funded projects is an added advantage.
  • Good knowledge of traffic rules and the ability to drive and do basic repairs on different 4WD light vehicles.
  • Defensive driving training or certification will be an asset.
  • An auto mechanics certificate will be considered an advantage.
  • Ability to communicate well in English and local languages.
  • Basic internet and email communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a professional manner.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and meet deadlines.
