Design Lead

Role overview

A fast-scaling digital agency focused on premium Shopify Plus e-commerce experiences is seeking a Design Lead to strengthen and elevate its creative output. The agency works with some of Australia’s most respected brands as well as ambitious local and international startups.

This position blends hands-on design execution with leadership, mentoring, strategic input, and collaboration across teams. You will guide creative direction, help shape design operations, and support team growth while partnering with project managers and engineers to deliver high-end digital experiences.

Key responsibilities

• Direct the creation and critique of UI/UX ideas, prototypes, and finished design work.
• Support the growth of the design team through feedback, training, and career development conversations.
• Assist with defining project scope, including time and cost estimates for new work.
• Set and maintain design quality standards across all digital customer touchpoints.
• Work alongside a Creative Director to evolve and expand the studio’s design offering.

What the employer is looking for

The ideal candidate has a strong background in digital design and proven experience leading others. You should be confident using Figma and Adobe Creative Suite, and comfortable designing for responsive web environments with accessibility in mind. A sharp eye for typography, layout, motion/interaction, and established UX patterns is essential. Experience in scoping work, managing deadlines, and partnering with project managers and developers is also important. Prior agency or studio experience is preferred.
